Romanesque west tower (center tower)

history

The church was rebuilt between 1607 and 1610 in the post-Gothic style by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. It replaced a Romanesque church, of which the west tower is still preserved. This late Romanesque tower, also known as the center tower, only received an upper floor designed as a half-timbered building in the post-Gothic period.

Building description

It is a plastered building with dividing elements made of sandstone in the form of a three-aisled basilica. The simple exterior shows a poorly structured facade. The coats of arms of the Diocese of Würzburg and the city of Bischofsheim are attached to the eastern entrance door. To the left of this the initiation board is set into the wall, to the right you can see a painted sundial. Although the old Romanesque west tower has been preserved, the new church tower rises on the south side of the choir , a six-storey choir flank tower with a pointed helmet and pointed-arch sound windows . It is a typical Julius Echter tower .

The three-aisled nave has a very high central nave. The side aisles are separated from the central nave by round arches . The walls of the central nave and the side aisles are broken through by four pointed arched windows with tracery . The single-nave polygonal choir with a pointed choir arch connects to the east in the same width as the central nave.
