St. Gordian and Epimachus

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Gordian and Epimachus in Memmingerberg in Upper Swabia in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria is a listed building.

history

The church organization was initially carried out by the Kempten Abbey , so the first church in Memmingerberg was consecrated to the patron saints of Kemptens and the saints Gordianus and Epimachus .

The oldest part of the church is the choir . It comes from a previous church consecrated in 1483. The substructure of the tower and the core of the nave come from post-medieval times . The church was damaged in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703. In 1709 the roof structure was rebuilt. The vestibule on the west side and the gallery staircase date from 1831. More extensive renovations were carried out in 1843 on the nave of the church. In 1868 the tower was raised and given a pointed helmet . In 1958 the church was restored.

Building description

The nave has four window axes and arched windows. There is a wooden gallery on the west side of the nave. The choir with a 5/8 end is drawn in and has a ribbed vault on pyramid consoles. There are buttresses with beveled edges on the outside of the church . The church tower is on the south side of the nave. The substructure of the church tower is four-sided, the upper floor is octagonal . The basement of the church tower has a barrel vault with stitch caps . The vestibule on the north side has a round arched entrance and a slightly pointed barrel vault. On the north side of the choir, a grave niche between two buttresses contains a heavily weathered sandstone tomb.

Interior

The pulpit , which was renewed in 1703, has a marbled wooden structure with an octagonal basket with corner pilasters , in whose fields paintings depict Christ and four apostles . The paintings are probably by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein , who painted a pulpit in Memmingerberg in 1699. The sound cover attachment bears wooden figures of the Christian virtues as shield holders and as a crown a Salvator figure .

The nave contains a number of paintings. The depiction of the Last Supper and Saint Martin and the beggar date from the beginning of the 18th century ; The paintings Adoration of the Shepherds and Resurrection of Christ were created in 1707 ; the Holy Family with the family of Zachariä dates from the early 19th century . The crucifixion group from the beginning of the 18th century is executed in the manner of Johann Friedrich Sichelbein. The four evangelists from the second quarter of the 18th century are depicted below the gallery . The apostles Peter and Paul on the gallery are from the same time. On the gallery there are another 13 wooden panels, probably created by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein from 1696 with depictions of the Apostle Paul.

The wooden figure of a trumpet angel is from the beginning of the 18th century. A memorial plaque in the church (labeled "Reich") made of Solnhofen limestone commemorates those who died in 1805–1815.
