Church tower of St. Johann Baptist

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johann Baptist is a medieval church in the Steinheim district of Hanau .

history

In 1329 a chapel to the Holy Spirit was mentioned for the first time, which is believed to be the predecessor of today's church. In 1449 the building was elevated to a parish church under Dietrich Schenk von Erbach , Elector - Archbishop of Mainz .

building

The gothic hall church was initially given its shape in two phases, on the one hand when it became a parish church and on the other when the retracted choir with 5/8 end and net vault was added in the years 1504–1509 . Compared to the delicate Gothic architecture, the tower, which does not wear a helmet but is decorated with four corner turrets, looks very defensive and archaic. In 1876–79, the church underwent a thorough renovation under Pierre Cuypers , which greatly changed its historical appearance. So was z. B. replaced the vault in the nave with a wooden barrel . In 1950 the church was renovated again.

Furnishing

The choir stalls with their excellent wood carvings are from the time the choir was built. The statue of Maria in a halo, which stands on a crescent moon, is a wood carving from the workshop of the Frankfurt cathedral builder Madern Gerthener . It originally stood in the church of the Kinzdorf and after the Reformation came to the County of Hanau-Münzenberg in the Roman Catholic Steinheim, which was still in the Electorate of Mainz. The epitaph of Frowin von Hutten and his wife Kunigunde von Hattstein should also be emphasized . The altar is a neo-Gothic work by Georg Busch from the renovation in the 19th century.
