The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Sankt Johann , a district of the municipality of Siegsdorf in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein , is essentially a Romanesque building that was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. and was changed in the 17th century. The church is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria. It is surrounded to the north and west by a cemetery wall made of plastered quarry stone.

history

The church was probably founded in the 9th century. The oldest walls of the nave are dated to the first half of the 12th century. In the early 15th century a new choir was built, and in 1630 the nave was extended to the west. After a lightning strike, the church had to be renovated between 1717 and 1721. In the course of these construction measures, the western vestibule was added and the roof turret with its onion hood was built. Inside, the gallery and the vault of the nave were created. 1876 took place the re-gothicised of the interior and the renewal of equipment .

Exterior construction

The nave, which dates back to the Romanesque period, is made of irregular, plastered field stones . The late Gothic choir, which is the same width as the nave, differs in its base and the painted corner blocks , the painted frieze under the eaves and the edged ashlar stones. The facade paintings were restored during the renovation in 1976.

The four-bay nave, which was originally covered flat, has one of transverse arches under collected lunette ton that rimmed with multiple empty quatrefoil panels decorated. The walls are structured by flat pilasters with strong, profiled pieces of entablature . A broad arch leads into the choir, which is closed on five sides and is covered by a fan vault with a central keystone , which rests on narrow half-columns without capitals .

  • The gallery and probably the organ have been preserved from the baroque furnishings .
  • The altar was made in the neo-Gothic style in 1876 . The group of figures depicting the baptism of Jesus in the central niche commemorates the patron saint of the church, John the Baptist . Two martyrs are depicted to the side, the figure on the right, St. Lawrence , can be recognized by his attribute , the rust. The figure on the left holds the martyr's palm in his left hand and a staff with a cross in his right hand. In the excerpt is God the Father shown.
  • The two leaded glass windows in the choir also date from the 19th century . On the left window St. Florian is shown extinguishing a burning house with a bucket of water, on the right window St. Leonhard , who is venerated as the patron saint of cattle, can be recognized by his crook and chains.
