The parish church of St. John the Baptist in Schwerzen in the Waldshut district is a late baroque Catholic church.

history

The church was demolished in 1781 except for the north and west walls and the tower and was rebuilt by 1791, presumably according to a plan by the Baroque master builder Peter Thumb , in place of a previous building from 1582, including the old tower. The foundation stone was laid on May 26, 1782 with the permission of the Bishop of Konstanz, Maximilian Christoph von Rodt and on the instructions of Prince Johann Nepomuk von Schwarzenberg . The builder was Georg Schutzger von St. Blasien. Tyrolean miners were hired for the construction on the flood-protected gravel terrace above the Wutach valley . The foundations were lowered to street level.

inner space

The furnishings at the end of the baroque era could no longer be surpassed even by the late rococo - the new elements of classicism are already being incorporated here . The main altar painting by the Kurtrier court painter Januarius Zick, which shows the baptism of Jesus by Johannes in the Jordan , is still entirely in the Baroque style .

On the side wall is an epitaph by von Beck. On top of the chalice is the motto of the barons: One for all , and under the names of those once buried in the church it says: Rest gently in your crypt until the Creator calls us too .

The alabaster reliefs and the pulpit were made by the sculptor Johann Friedrich Vollmar . He also designed the main altar with the tabernacle . The picture on the left side altar was erected in 1834 under Pastor Franz Sales Schmid and shows the Assumption of Mary ; it comes from the Freiburg artist Kreszentia Stadler , based on paintings by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo . The reliquary pyramids on the left and right on the main altar were donated by the canon of the St. Verenastift in Zurzach, Franz Leopold Ignatius von Beck zu Willmendingen on December 4, 1802 and contain fragments of bone from the holy martyrs Felix, Clemens, Fortunat and Reparat.

Due to repeated vandalism, the church is only open for services.

organ

Organ loft

The acquisition of the organ from the organ builder Johann Ferdinand Balthasar Stieffell in 1792 is thanks to Franz Sales Kirn, who was pastor of the parish church in Schwerzen from 1952 to 1972. It was installed in 1958 and restored in 1971. Organ concerts and recordings took place.

Bells

The bells had to be handed in during the First and Second World Wars, the first were from the Rosenlächer bell foundry, the second from the Grüninger bell foundry . The remaining smallest bell was supplemented by the small chapel bell from the castle chapel of Willmendingen Castle , both of which were given in 1952 for the casting of new bells made of special bronze .

The Linde Group to the church is a natural monument and at the same part of the future FFH type region Klettgau back u. a. with the great mouse-eared one of a kind of common interest .
