Johanneskapelle in Zarten

The St. Johannes Chapel is a Roman Catholic church building in the Zarten district of the Kirchzarten community in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district of Baden-Württemberg . It is a branch church of the parish of Stegen in the pastoral care unit Dreisamtal of the dean's office Neustadt in the Archdiocese of Freiburg . It is dedicated to John the Baptist , whose feast is celebrated on June 24th.

history

With the mention in the deed of donation of an Alemannic Cozpert to the monastery of St. Gallen in 816, the Zarten Chapel is the oldest church in the entire Dreisamtal . The current building originally dates back to the 11th century, as evidenced by a Romanesque window discovered in 1965 and uncovered in 1984. Later changes made it look more Gothic . The interior, however, makes a baroque impression. The main altar probably only came here after the secularization in 1806. In 1878 a ridge turret was added and a sacristy was added.

In 1958 the Zarten branch of the Kirchzarten parish was assigned to the newly founded parish of Stegen.

After an extensive renovation in 1984, during which the wooden ceiling painted before 1700 was exposed, the chapel was consecrated on November 25, 1985. In 2004 a 500-year-old Secco painting with a passion scene above the choir arch was discovered in the attic, which is not accessible due to the coffered ceiling . Before the wooden ceiling was installed, the chapel had a barrel vault .

In 2008 a small organ was donated privately , and in 2010 the choir room was supplemented by a celebration altar and an ambo .

The garden around the church, formerly the cemetery, was laid out from 1987 to 1991 by the Kirchzarten community as part of a village development measure and renovated in 2014/15.

Building

The east-facing, originally rectangular building was supplemented in the Middle Ages by a choir with a polygonal finish. On the south side there is a sundial, next to it the coats of arms of Freiburg im Breisgau and Vorderösterreich , which ruled the valley for several centuries. The iron roof turret is on the south side, facing the street, provided with a clock and contains two bells.

The chapel can be entered through a round-arched portal on the west side or through a smaller, also round-arched portal on the south side. The main altar in Baroque style, which was probably not originally made for this building, shows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist on the central painting and thus fits in with the patronage of the chapel on June 24th. Above the large altarpiece there is a depiction of the apostle John , whose feast day is December 27th. So here are "Sommerhans" and "Winterhans", as they are called in the vernacular after their memorial days. The two sculptures on the side of the altarpiece show St. Blaise on the left , recognizable by the crossed candles, and on the right St. Hubertus . On the walls to the left and right of the main altar, two frescoes were uncovered in 1965 , John the Baptist on the left and St. Margaret on the right demonstrate.

The side altars were created for the chapel; on the left they carry a statue of Maria Immaculata (around 1800) and on the right a sculpture of St. Margaret, who, according to the legend , is crushing a snake. This is attributed to the sculptor Matthias Faller . A low gallery closes off the church interior to the west. The organ, usually found here, is near the altar.

The St. John's Garden is intended to be a reminder of the tradition of monastery and farm gardens . It contains the archetypal forms of plants with Christian symbolism, most of which were of importance in pre-Christian times. It is maintained and supplemented according to the guidelines of biodynamic farming , among other things historical rose varieties grow there.

organ

The organ in the chapel is on permanent loan from the private collection of Gerhard Schillinger and comprises three registers (covered 8 ', flute 4', principal 2 ') with 168 pipes.
