St. Josef in Werth

St. Josef is the Roman Catholic parish church in the Stolberg district of Werth in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Joseph . The Allmanshof and Lindenhof also belong to the parish.

location

The church building is located in the western part of Werth on the corner of Dorfstrasse and Mausbacher Strasse.

history

Werth initially only owned a small chapel built in 1856/57. The southern part of the village belonged to the parish of St. Laurentius Gressenich and the northern part to the parish of St. Wendelinus Hastenrath . In the course of industrialization, the population of Werth grew rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century, so that the residents wanted their own church. First of all, the church building collecting association for Werth-Weissenberg was founded in 1901. By 1916 the association had collected so much money and thus created the conditions that on October 1, 1918 Werth became a chapel community with its own asset management. The hall of the “Drei Kaiser” restaurant had already been converted into an emergency church .

Werth has been an independent parish since January 1st, 1953 .

Building history

For more than 25 years the hall of the restaurant "Drei Kaiser" served as an emergency church. When it was destroyed in 1944 as a result of the Second World War , it was decided to build a church, the foundation stone of which was laid on April 18, 1948. The location of the destroyed hall served as the building site. The following year the church was completed and on September 18, 1949 the first service was celebrated here. The plans for the new building were drafted by Jodokus Kehrer. In 1953 the church was elevated to a parish church and renovations were carried out in 1979 and 1986 under the direction of the architect Martin Schoenen from Stolberg.

Building description
