Parish Church of St. Kilian in Lügde

The Catholic parish church of St. Kilian is a listed church building on Höxterstrasse in Lügde in the Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

As a first building, a presumably Carolingian hall with a retracted choir was excavated, which was subsequently expanded to include a side aisle on the north side . The oldest part of the existing church is the tower, built around 1100 and raised by 1200 . The nave and choir were built in the third third of the 12th century.

The Romanesque vaulted basilica in a bound system with a main apse and side apses was built on a mountain spur south of the city . It is surrounded by a cemetery with high stone walls. After the city was founded and the Marienkirche was built in the city center, it continued to be the parish church for the surrounding villages. It was also used as a cemetery church.

Outside

The clearly structured, staggered structure made of quarry stone masonry was originally plastered. Since the renovation from 1870 to 1882 it has been stone-sighted. The base-less tower with corner blocks is of remarkable wall thickness. In the upper part there are sound arcades with set columns and cube capitals . The simple west portal was later reduced in size. The nave and the choir stand on a carefully crafted, profiled base. The walls are divided by small arched windows. The successive increase during the construction phase compared to the original plan can be read from the corner cuboid, the window height and the apses that are too low in relation to the wall height. On the south transept portal there are columns with idiosyncratic cube-shaped capitals. In the tympanum a mask is shown. The tree of life can be seen in the tympanum of the similarly designed north portal . The two nave portals were added in 1753.

Inside

inner space

The proportions of the impressive room were restored in 1939 by lowering the floor to the original level, which gradually rises to the east. The low arcades in the two-bay nave are supported by heavy, square pillars alternating with columns. The large, expansive cube capitals are decorated with palmettes , volutes and leaves. The ridge vaults in the central nave with ogival shield arches and strong, broad arched belt arches rest over high, canted templates. Barrel vaults with irregular stitch caps were drawn into the aisles . The curvature of the east side is lower than that of the central nave. Columns were placed in the apse arches. There are altar blocks in the flat side apses. The tower hall is equipped with a barrel vault.

Painting

The ornamental wall and vault painting from around 1200 is carried out in the style of the Soest school. It was repainted around 1939 and restored from 1971 to 1976. The apse painting is from the beginning of the 13th century. The apostle frieze was uncovered and supplemented in 1873. The overpainting was partially removed in 1937 and painted with a Majestas Domini with assistance figures. With a partial collapse of the apse arch in 1958, this work was lost except for fragments. During a restoration in 1961, it was supplemented with grisaille painting .

Furnishing

  • In the north transept, in front of a patterned ground, under a richly decorated canopy , there is a Madonna and Child from the second quarter of the 14th century.
  • The late Gothic three seat is decorated with carved tracery .
  • The four baroque carved figures, two kings and two bishops are from the second half of the 17th century.
  • The bell from 1799 was cast by Caspar Greve.
  • In the cemetery there is a grave cross with a bulky crucifix in front of the tower portal. It commemorates the executioner Mathias Bröcker, who died in 1691 .
