St. Kilian's Church

The Catholic parish church of St. Kilian is in Brenken , a district of the city of Büren in the Paderborn district . It belongs to the Büren Pastoral Association in the Büren-Delbrück Dean's Office of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The church was first mentioned in a document in the 1st quarter of the 11th century. A previous building from Carolingian times was excavated in 1978 as a hall with a retracted rectangular choir . The nave was rebuilt in the 11th century and the west tower was added in the 12th century.

Late Gothic ceiling painting in St. Kilian's choir vault

The namesake of the church is Saint Kilian . The Romanesque three-aisled vaulted pillar basilica in a bound system with a broad transept was built in the 12th to 13th centuries. The choir is square, the apses are semicircular. The walls of the simple quarry stone building are structured by arched windows and portals . A flat ceiling was originally planned, as indicated by the walled-in clapboard windows and the different heights of the ledge and template warriors. The groin vaults rest on massive pillars with flat templates. The yokes are separated by wide belt arches. Beltless groin vaults were drawn into the aisles over simple consoles. During the renovation in 1978, the late Romanesque room setting , with color changes on the belt arches and ashlar of the pillars, was carried out according to the findings. The late Gothic ceiling painting in the choir vault shows the Last Judgment . During a renovation after 1924, the sacristy was enlarged.

tower

The five-storey defense tower , which comes from an older building, indicates that the Carolingians built a church on the site. It is structured by four rows of coupled windows. The approach of a former stair tower has been preserved on the north side . The ground floor of the tower is divided by blind arcades on half-columns. The bell storey was renewed in 1873. The ground floor hall was opened to the church in 1889.
