Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Mary

The Church of St. Maria is a Roman Catholic parish church in the municipality of Windisch in the canton of Aargau . It is located on Hauserstrasse and is a cultural asset of regional importance .

Building history and description

The church building was built in 1963/64 according to plans by the architects Ruth and Edi Lanners from Zurich , who emerged as the winner of a project competition in 1962. In late autumn 1964, construction work began on the free-standing exposed concrete bell tower . The church was consecrated on May 27, 1965 by Bishop Franziskus von Streng . As early as 1950, a plot of land southwest of the amphitheater was chosen as the location . The narrow terrain with the noisy country road in the southeast suggested a concentration of the parish center with its diverse spatial program (church, halls, meeting and secretarial rooms, classroom and library, as well as parish apartment, guest and staff room) around a quiet inner courtyard facing the Roman Theater opens. As simple, pure functional buildings designed from edged Baukuben Annex on the more distant from the road terrain are subordinate to the church.

architecture

The church building, built using reinforced concrete technology under a pent roof , rises above an irregular, polygonal floor plan . This is derived from the idea of a semicircular group gathered around a speaker. The ceiling of the trapezoidal shell rises to the east, the choir is raised above the nave by a few steps . A room-high window with abstract colored glazing illuminates the choir area between the choir walls that meet at an acute angle . The baptistery to the left of the portal and the weekday chapel with confessional and the adjoining sacristy in the western half of the building are integrated into the building and attached to the main nave .

Georg Malin was responsible for the artistic design of the choir, in the center of which an iron sun with the crucifix hovers above the altar hall with the holy grave . Willy Helbling designed the glass concrete windows in the baptistery and in the choir.
