St. Maria Rosenkranz is a Catholic parish church in the Wersten district of Düsseldorf . The neo-Romanesque basilica was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

history

Wersten belonged to the parish of St. Nikolaus in Himmelgeist until 1899 . On January 1, 1884, a church building association Wersten was founded, which in June 1890 acquired a plot of land in Wersten. In 1891 an emergency church was built from an acquired old boiler shop and consecrated in 1893. In 1899 an application was made to set up a separate parish in Wersten, whereupon on March 22, 1901, the elevation to a parish took place. From 1907 to 1910 the neo-Romanesque basilica of St. Maria Rosenkranz was built by the architect Wilhelm Sültenfuß , who built several churches in the neo-Romanesque style. In October 1910, the bishop finally consecrated it. The church was badly damaged in the last two years of World War II, the reconstruction lasted until 1955, some vault paintings could not be restored. In the 1990s, the interior painting was redesigned again in terms of color.

architecture

Like most of the churches built in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area at the beginning of the 20th century, St. Maria Rosenkranz was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The model was the Romanesque architecture of the Staufer period . The architect was Wilhelm Sültenfuß.

The church is a three-aisled basilica with a transept. Behind the crossing there is a round apse . The tower is part of the portal . There are early Gothic buttresses on the sides . The arched windows in the upper aisles as well as in the side aisles are based on the traditional high Romanesque style, as are the rosette bands on the facade and the double arched windows in the tower.

The originally late Expressionist windows did not survive the Second World War , nor did the ceiling paintings by Hans Kohlschein .

The interior was redesigned in the 1950s by the architect Hans Schwippert .
