It is said to be beneficial for various diseases, including chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, functional and degenerative spinal and joint diseases, post-traumatic damage to the musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular regulatory disorders. In addition, the thermal water should also be suitable for pregnant women, babies and small children.
Lodge
In 2014 the hotel was 74% occupied, and of the more than 300,000 visitors to the thermal baths, almost one in three was also a hotel guest at the lodge.
A total of 178 rooms and suites with almost 400 beds are available:
category | number |
---|---|
Double room | 126 |
Junior suites | 20th |

The minimum equipment stipulates that all bathrooms have underfloor heating, a bathtub or shower and daylight and the toilet is separately accessible. Each room has a balcony, wooden parquet floors, flat screen TV with radio function and WiFi. All rooms are soundproofed and lodge guests have access to their own thermal bath area.
Technology and ecology
The St. Martins Therme & Lodge uses environmentally friendly energy sources and energy recovery . There are nesting sites for birds on the building facade and an ecological grazing concept is used along the access road to the lodge.
The lodge and thermal baths are barrier-free throughout.
Transport links
The system can be reached via the public transport network from the Frauenkirchen train stop from Vienna Central Station . There is a thermal shuttle with fixed travel times available, lodge guests are picked up at any time. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, an ÖBB post bus runs to the thermal baths.
Individual traffic coming from Vienna, Budapest or Bratislava can leave the A4 motorway at the Mönchhof exit, drive through Mönchhof to Frauenkirchen and then turn left in the direction of Apetlon two kilometers outside the town to the thermal baths.
Free parking spaces and a paid underground car park are available.
History of origin
initiative
Since the number of overnight stays in the region around Lake Neusiedl stagnated during the 1990s , politicians and tourism managers tried to build a thermal bath east of the lake after considering several alternatives . On the one hand, bathers at Lake Neusiedl should be offered an alternative in bad weather and, on the other hand, new guests should be won outside of the summer months. This lead project was intended to give tourism in the region an impetus, which - in addition to the existing offer - promotes the entire regional economy.
In addition, 200 new jobs were expected for the structurally weak and touristic, agricultural region and the safeguarding or creation of around 200 additional jobs for the supplier companies. Around 20 apprentices should also get a training place here (a further 35 jobs were created from 2014, three out of four employees come from the vicinity of the thermal baths).
In cooperation with the provincial government of Burgenland , it was possible to integrate all the municipalities of the Seewinkel and to set up the project together with local companies under the leadership of WiBAG. WiBAG is the common short form of Wirtschaftsservice Burgenland AG, which has been operating under Wirtschaft Burgenland GmbH since 2015 and is fully owned by the federal state of Burgenland.
In 2003, Vamed, commissioned by the project operators, presented a positive feasibility study and an initial project plan .
owner
The 14 municipalities of Seewinkel with 24.5%, ATHENA Burgenland Beteiligungen AG with 49%, a trustee with 2% and WiBAG with 24.5% stake founded the "Seewinkel Therme Immobiliengesellschaft mbH" based in Eisenstadt to finance the Secure the project. Later, all of the regional shares were bundled in WiBAG, which now holds 77% and the share of the municipalities is 23%.
These 77% shares in WiBAG are to be put up for sale as soon as the company generates corresponding profits and the market environment is favorable. In view of the fierce competition, especially from Hungary, no date can be planned.
In addition, the "Seewinkel Thermeninfrastructure GmbH" and the "Seewinkel ThermeninfrastructureHolding GmbH" were founded so that the municipalities can act as a legal entity . But contributions to the project were also made with these companies, among other things the drilling for thermal water was financed. These companies are now owned by the municipalities. During the development phase, some shares belonged to WiBAG, which also provided the management and handled the project. The two companies sell the thermal water to the St. Martins Therme and reimburse the credits with the proceeds and the municipal taxes - in addition to the income from the thermal baths.
Location
When looking for the optimal location from 2003 onwards, there was no agreement for a long time, several municipalities were interested in having the thermal baths in town. Especially the north beach in Podersdorf am See was discussed for a long time. The results of earlier gas and oil wells were therefore viewed with experts in order to locate a location in the area of the underground artesian lake . This made it clear that suitable water does not exist in the area of Podersdorf or Weiden.
In 2005 the decision was made in favor of the centrally located town of Frauenkirchen, the residence of the then governor Hans Niessl and the largest town in the Seewinkel. After test drilling in an abandoned gravel pit, which unearthed high-quality thermal water from Europe's largest mineral water resource, a suitable building site was found a few kilometers south of the city.
The site borders the nature reserve to the south and west , but is just outside. On the one hand, this supported the demand for the most environmentally friendly construction and operation possible, and on the other hand, the building authority requirements and procedures were simplified.
financing
There was agreement among those involved that the profitability of the project would only pay off as a whole through the effects on the region, since the income from the thermal baths could only repay the investments in the long term. Weiden am See as the fourteenth municipality, however, got out of the project early because it felt disadvantaged by the distribution key for municipal tax revenue.
The project costs amounted to 83.2 million euros. This was financed 47% with 44 million euros from loans and 19% from subsidies (22 million euros each half from the federal government and half from the state under the Labor Market Promotion Act). 34% came from municipalities and local infrastructure companies such as BEWAG , BEGAS, Wasserleitungsverband Nördliches Burgenland, as well as lending banks. Each municipality contributed a guarantee of around 500,000 euros for the construction, the investors a further 13 million euros. EU funds from the ERDF pot could also be won for the project. The entire financing process was organized under the direction of Raiffeisenlandesbank Burgenland.
The profitability calculation was presented positively and argued with a catchment area of 3.5 million potential guests within a radius of 100 km. The greater Vienna area, the greater Bratislava area, Győr, Sopron and Wiener Neustadt were enumerated. With the expected approximately 1000 day guests, a financing term of 25 years was forecast.
Establishment
The overall project for construction and operation was handed over to Vamed, which founded the "Therme Seewinkel Betriebsgesellschaft mbH" for operation. Saint Martin , patron saint of Burgenland, was chosen as the namesake of the thermal baths .
The design by the architect Wolfgang Vanek from Holzbauer & Partner in Vienna was awarded the contract in the course of a tender . It envisages a spiral-shaped central building for the thermal baths with an adjoining sauna area and a hotel directly on the lake with a gross floor area of 36,024 m².
The shell was completed by HABAU , taking into account the best possible ecological compatibility, in 9 months with a good 140 workers and 7 tower cranes. For the building with a base area of 16,000 m 2 , 100,000 m 3 of excavation were necessary. Around 4,000 tons of reinforcing steel, around 100,000 m 2 of formwork and around 35,000 m 3 of concrete were used in the construction.
Specialists, such as Klafs for the saunas and steam baths, were commissioned for the interior fittings .
The municipalities made further contributions through investments in the surrounding infrastructure such as road construction.
The groundbreaking was in 2007 and the thermal baths opened in November 2009.
extension
The economic success with 62,000 overnight stays per year came quickly. That is why an expansion project worth 17.5 million euros was started in the summer of 2013, which included a further 28 suites of 45 and 79 m² and other extensions in the thermal baths and sauna area. An additional sauna area was built on stilts into the bathing lake without affecting ongoing operations.
The festive opening of the new areas - with over 900 invited guests from politics, business and culture - took place on November 11, 2014 on Martini, the national patron's feast day.
Awards
- In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 the thermal baths received the “Austria`s Leading Resort” award from “ World Travel Awards ”.
- At the “European Health & Spa Awards” 2015, the St. Martins Therme & Lodge was named the best thermal spa resort.
- The customer ratings on Trip Advisor are also above average.
criticism
The Landtag MP Tschürtz of the FPÖ criticized the then SPÖ government under Hans Niessl in a Landtag session in 2012 because the jobs created by the thermal baths with subsidies - in his opinion - largely went to foreign workers.
Niessl explained that only 30% of the employees come from neighboring countries.
