The church

The Protestant Church of St. Mauritius is the village church of the municipality of Marisfeld in the Hildburghausen district , in the Franconian south of the Free State of Thuringia . It is located in the center of the village right next to the castle and castle park.

history

The first mention of the church comes from 1150. The builders were probably the Lords of Schmeheim or the Marschalk von Marisfeld , who were wealthy in the place at that time. The choir tower of the church was built in 1497.

The old bells of the church are remarkable . The largest bell was cast in 1498. It bears the names of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as an inscription, as well as the inscription “Christe cum tua pace. Maritius Patronus. A. Dom. MCCCCLXXXXVIII ” (“ Christ be with your peace. Mauritius is the patron of this church. 1498. ”) The bell called Laurenzer is said to come from the Laurentius Chapel , a former pilgrimage site on the Silbachskuppe between the neighboring towns of Schmeheim , Dillstädt and Dietzhausen . A popular legend reports that the old bell of the Laurentius Chapel was discovered and excavated by a shepherd. After the bell was loaded onto a cart, it is said to have been pulled by a blind horse, which decided which community should get the bell. The second bell dates from 1496 and also bears a Latin inscription. The year of casting of the smallest bell is not known.

In 1539 the village became spiritually independent. Until then, the faithful were looked after by monks from the Veßra monastery . In 1557 a separate rectory was built, which is still preserved today.

Around 1711, the church was largely rebuilt in the baroque style. The organ from 1719 is the work of the organ builder Nicolaus Seeber from Römhild . The ornate organ prospectus was made by the sculptor Hans Justus Leib from Streufdorf . Two carved angels with coats of arms indicate the Marschalk von Ostheim and the Lords of Bibra , who were probably the donors .

Today a bat colony lives in the tower .

architecture

The listed St. Mauritius Church is a fortified fortified church . The massive square choir tower has seven loopholes . A passage is about 20 meters above the ground. The octagonal, stone pyramid helmet begins above this . In the substructure of the tower is the choir , which is spanned by a flat cross vault. There is a simple altar under a leaded glass window on the east side, which shows the crucifixion scene and was created in 1885 in the workshop of the Munich brothers Burkhardt. There is a Gothic window on the south side and the sacristy on the north side .

The nave, on the other hand, is built in the Baroque style. In the rear part there is also the half-timbered construction typical of the region . The church has a single nave and has two-tier white wooden galleries with blue and gold decorations on both sides . The single-manual slider-door organ was built by the organ builder Nicolaus Seeber in 1719 . It is located on a gallery in the back of the ship. A flat, square grid, blue barrel vault made of wood with golden decorations forms the ceiling.
