St. Michael is a church in the Tännesberg market in the south of the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab . It is the parish church of the same Catholic parish , which the Dean Leuchtenberg of the diocese Regensburg belongs. The patronage is on September 29th.

history

In 1019 Johann von Paulsdorf had a chapel consecrated to St. Jobst (= Jodokus ) built, today's pilgrimage church of St. Jodok . It was probably the parish church of the village in the past. After Tännesberg was fortified with a curtain wall, the first church was built in the village, and the parish of Tännesberg is mentioned for the first time in 1300. Major fires (1639, 1726, 1756, 1777) repeatedly affected the market, the church and rectory burned down several times, but were rebuilt. In 1826, a fire caused by lightning struck the church and tower in ruins. The Tännesbergers promised an annual vow of the cross to the Schlossberg (May 5th). The parish church was rebuilt in its current form between 1827 and 1829 under Pastor Nehmann. The consecration by Auxiliary Bishop Boniface von Urban took place on May 10, 1841.

Building

The nave lies in rounded corners next to the choir . The barrel vault of the church with stitch caps and double cross straps rests on double pilasters . The tower of St. Michael stands north of the choir, is square at the bottom, octagonal at the top and has a dome . The tower height is 38 meters.

Furnishing

The barrel vaults of St. Michael are decorated with ceiling paintings in the Nazarene style from 1892. The pictures depict the passion of Jesus . The Way of the Cross and the church windows in the house of God also date from 1892. The baroque pulpit is decorated with “three medallions: Christ as the sower (teaching post), the good shepherd (pastoral office) and the knocking Christ at the door (priesthood) ”. Above is the church patron Michael as a knight, also patron of Germany, how he defeated the dragon, which symbolizes evil. His shield bears the Latin inscription "QVIS UT DEVS" (Who is like God?). The choir room was redesigned in 1981. The old high altar was removed and a newly designed altar table, ambo and tabernacle were added.

Bells

There are five bells in the church tower, which come from different foundries and eras.

They hang in a two-tier wooden chair which has 3 fields on the upper level and 2 compartments on the lower level. The two large bells (1 + 2) ring in the lower fields.
