St. Jodok is a pilgrimage church in the Tännesberg market in the south of the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab . It belongs to the Catholic parish of St. Michael the dean's office Leuchtenberg of the Diocese of Regensburg . It is on Oberviechtacher Straße outside the town of Tännesberg on the edge of the Tännesberg forest.

history

In 1019 Johann von Paulsdorf had a chapel consecrated to St. Jobst ( Jodokus ) built, today's pilgrimage church of St. Jodok. Jodokus lived as a hermit in the 7th century and was already highly admired in the Middle Ages. The chapel was probably the parish church of the village at first. Since it was built, farmers from the area have made pilgrimages to Holy Jodok and sought help against diseases and epidemics. After the town of Tännesberg was fortified with a curtain wall, the first church was built in the town. In 1300 the parish Tännesberg was mentioned for the first time.

After the pilgrimage church of St. Jodok was destroyed in the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) , it was consecrated in its present form in 1689. In the 1950s the church slowly threatened to fall apart. Thanks to generous donations and a lot of manual and clamping services, it was possible to renovate the church. At the parish fair in 1976, Sankt Jodok was consecrated again.

Building

The sanctuary is drawn in with a yoke and a three-sided end. The barrel vault has stitch caps and the nave has a coffered wooden ceiling decorated with gilded risettes. On the west side of the building there is a turret with a dome, the sacristy is on the south side of the choir. The wooden gallery is decorated with depictions of the apostles .

Furnishing

There are four baroque altars inside the church. The high altar has twisted pillars wrapped in vines and richly carved cartouches and tendrils falling to the side, the hermit life of St. Jodok is depicted on the high altar picture. The altarpiece is crowned by the representation of God the Father .

The right side altar depicts the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, above it stands Jesus Christ as Salvator mundi . In front of the altarpiece is a bust of the horse patron St. Quirinus von Neuss , one of the Four Marshals of God . On the altarpiece of the left side altar one sees St. Sebastian pierced by arrows, over whom the sky opens; Christ and Mary , Queen of Martyrs, accompany the dying. Angels heal St. Rochus from his plague. Between the two saints of the plague , a rare view of Tännesberg from 1680 can be seen in the background. In the upper part, the Holy Spirit in the form of the dove completes the Holy Trinity as the coronation of all three altars.

A copy of the miraculous image of Maria-Hilf in Amberg on the Marien Altar on the north side of the church bears the Latin inscription “Fec. Anton Altman Ambergae June 24, 1802 “(Anton Altmann zu Amberg created it on June 24, 1802).

Vienna plague cross

The Vienna Plague Cross from 1690 shows how well known the pilgrimage site Tännesberg was in the Middle Ages. When the plague broke out in Vienna that year , pilgrims made their way to Tännesberg to ask for help. As soon as they got there, they received the news that the plague had stopped. In gratitude, the pilgrims left the processional cross behind.
