Kahla, St. Nicholas

The Catholic Church of St. Nikolaus is on the corner of Saalstrasse and Brückenplatz in Kahla , a small town in the Saale-Holzland district of Thuringia . It is a branch church of St. Elisabeth in Gera and belongs to the deanery of Gera in the diocese of Dresden-Meißen .

history

Around 1458 there was already a chapel at the site of today's church . In 1483/84 the construction of the late Gothic hospital church began. As the inscription on the entrance side in the west testifies, the church was completed in 1486 on the day of St. Dionysius . In 1525 the church was profaned . From around 1550 to the end of the 19th century, it served primarily as the church of the formerly neighboring old cemetery, but at times also as an alternative location for the city church when renovations or repairs were due there. It has been used by the Catholic community since the mid-1950s. After the interior was repaired and redesigned in 1962/63, it was re-consecrated as a Catholic church. The church has been extensively renovated after being damaged in the 2013 flood. It was consecrated again by Heinrich Timmerevers , the bishop of the Dresden-Meissen diocese.

Building description

The listed late Gothic hall church has a polygonal closed choir in the north . There is a ridge turret on the gable roof . On the north and west side there are ogival portals with profiled walls . The pointed arched windows of the nave were restored or replaced. The church furnishings from 1962/63 are simple.

In the course of the last renovation measures, movable partition walls were installed, some of which are glazed. In addition to the worship room, the church now also houses a community room. By relocating the main entrance to the previous north entrance, the church is now protected from flooding and is barrier-free.

The organ with nine registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal , was built in 1949 by Wilhelm Sauer .
