St. Nicholas

The Catholic branch church St. Nikolaus is a monument in Bitzenhofen near Dasing .

history

Until secularization, Bitzenhofen was largely owned by the St. Ulrich and Afra monastery in Augsburg . The church in Bitzenhofen was then a parish church of the monastery. In 1509, St. Stephen is named as the church patron, and in 1580 St. Nicholas . In 1704 Bitzenhofen and Taiting burned down almost completely in the War of the Spanish Succession , but the church was spared. It was rebuilt in 1770. In 1851 lightning struck the church and severely damaged it. In 1853 the church was extended and given a roof turret.

Furnishing

The Rosary Madonna, also known as the Epidemic Madonna, which is now placed above the pulpit , was a popular pilgrimage destination for farmers in the area in the past . Especially during the Thirty Years War and in the 18th century, the area was repeatedly plagued by epidemics that attacked both humans and cattle. The age of the Madonna is unknown. It is possible that it came from the hand of Bartholomäus Öberl around 1700 . However, other experts also place her in the ranks of the Gothic rosary madonnas. The figure was renovated in 1908 - possibly flawed as the rosary beads are missing.

The three altars are from the time it was built. The altar panel of the main altar depicting the glorification of St. Nikolaus is by Christian Menrad , a painter from Friedberg . The excerpt shows the stigmatization of St. Francis . In the right side altar the holy family with John the Baptist is depicted as a boy, on the left an Ecce homo . The peasant saints Notburga and Isidor can be seen in the extracts. The high-quality reliquary shrines on the side altars are works from Augsburg from the end of the 17th century. The pulpit, also from the end of the 17th century, probably originates from the previous church. The cross with Mary on the south wall is from the 18th century. The two figures below it around 1700 probably represent the holy Scholastika and the holy Walburga . The figures of the saints Nikolaus and Leonhard come from the second half of the 15th century. Another figure is the Archangel Michael . The Way of the Cross with an oval frame is from the 19th century.

The frescoes from 1908 are by Basilio Coletti († 1944) from Piere di Cadore . They show Jesus and the disciples of Emmaus in the choir and scenes from the legend of St. Nicholas in the nave . About the organ which is St. Cecilia shown.

The organ is one of the oldest in the area. It is completely preserved, but no longer playable.
