The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Nicholas in the Heinrich-Groh-Straße 11 in Munich district Freimann in the district Schwabing-Freimann is an early Gothic choir tower back from the first half of the 14th century, of which only the tower. The current nave was built towards the end of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. The church, which is consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra , is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The Freimanner Church was first mentioned around 1030. It was originally consecrated to St. Margaretha and is a subsidiary church of St. Martin in Mallertshofen , later of St. Katharina in Garching . Around 1320 a stone church was built with a massive choir tower in the east. Of the church, which burned down in the War of the Landshut Succession in 1504 and a second time in 1632 in the Thirty Years' War , only the tower remained. The nave was rebuilt in the 17th century.

In 1739 there was a change of patronage to St. Nicholas of Myra, from whom special protection against the frequent floods of the Isar was hoped.

In 1882 the church was extensively renovated and regotised. The nave was raised, a flat timber framing was added and the baroque windows were changed in the Gothic style.

In 1904 St. Nicholas was raised to an independent parish . After the construction of the new Freimanner parish and order church of St. Albert in 1933, the Nikolauskirche became a branch church. In 1937 it was redesigned as a war memorial chapel. Today it is used as the weekday church of the parish of St. Albert.

To the east of the nave is the tower , which is covered with a gable roof and has a base area of ​​around 5 × 5 meters and a height of around 20 meters. The four-storey tower is made of brickwork with a thickness of about one meter. It is structured by blending fields with pointed arch friezes and a German ribbon, the bell storey is broken through on three sides by two sound windows each .

  • The choir arch cross was created around 1700.
  • The figure of St. Nicholas on the site of the south side altar dates from the late 14th century.
  • The carved figure of the Madonna and Child at the location of the north side altar is a work by Matthias Bayer from around 1950/60.
  • On the southern wall of the nave are the figures of St. Stephen and the Apostle Peter .
  • Christ as the ruler of the world , a Gothic figure from the 15th century, is depicted above the barred carnelian niche on the north wall of the nave .
  • The figure of Our Lady of Sorrows on the north wall of the nave is dated around 1700.
  • The figure of St. Elisabeth comes from more recent times.
  • The Stations of the Cross on the nave walls are painted in the Baroque style.

The organ was installed in 1896 by the Munich organ builder Franz Borgias Maerz .
