The church in the village: St.Paulus in Berhausen

St. Paulus in Langenfeld - Berghausen is a registered monument and Berghausen's church in the village . It is a church within the Langenfeld parish of St. Josef and Martin .

To the prehistory

Around 1880, the desire for an own church in Berghausen first arose. But it was not until April 28, 1891, that 146 Berghausen citizens joined together in what was then the Langen village inn to form the “Berghausen Church Building Association”. When it was believed that enough funds had been raised in 1897 , it was decided to build a chapel . However, since the mother parish of St.Martinus could not get a promise regarding the position of a clergyman , the plan was abandoned.

St Paul in Berghausen, inaugurated in 1926

After renaming the Church Building Association in "Mary Help of Christians Association Berghausen" on June 16, 1901 now spiritual direction there were discussions about the appropriate location . The subsequent search for land seemed to take a happy turn in 1911, when Pastor Boddenberg agreed to donate a piece of land to the parish on Baumberger Strasse. And on September 4, 1911, the church council decided in its meeting to carry out the design by an architect Heinrich Forthmann from Cologne, who immediately received 500  marks as the first down payment for his work.

To the building history

But the discussion about the building site did not die down. Finally, the proponents of a church opposite the school prevailed and it was the Baron of Eppinghofen one opposite the school located about 75  a are large site acquired. The purchase price was 1,500 marks. But now the First World War stood in the way of all further efforts. And after the war the period of inflation remained to be survived until the groundbreaking ceremony finally took place in 1926 . However, the church planned for the location at Pullerhof was no longer implemented, but a design by the still young architect Bernhard Rotterdam from Langenfeld , born on February 8, 1893 as the son of the building contractor Heinrich Rotterdam . The solemn consecration of St. Paulus Church was celebrated on December 19, 1926. Incidentally, Görgens suspected that the patronage was a hidden tribute to the principal teacher Paul Walsum, who was well- deserved for the construction of this church .

Shaping change - developing faith

The same parish merged on 1 January 2011 at the course of the archbishop's project "Shaping Change - faith unfold" with the seven other Langenfeld communities to parish St. Joseph and Martin .

To the bell

The bell of St. Paul was cast in the Middle Ages . In addition to the year, the inscription also contains the name Maternus - Maria . Saint Maternus was bishop in Cologne and lived in the 4th century. The name of the Mother of God makes it a bell of Mary . Its height is 80 cm, the diameter is slightly smaller, as was common with Gothic bells. Its weight is 150 kg and it is tuned to tone g .

To the bell story

The first known little church of the bell was a chapel that was located on the left bank of the Rhine until the river bed was shifted. In this respect, the little church shared the same fate with Haus Bürgel . After the separation from Zons , however , the building fell into disrepair and the bell fell into the forecourt , but without being damaged . After years of storage in deep grass , it was set up on December 19, 1886 in the emergency church of St. Joseph . After building the tower with the bell ringing in Immigrath , it was no longer needed there and was given away to Berghausen. There it has been ringing in a new bell cage since June 20, 1963 , driven by an electric motor , after a defect in the old bell cage made it necessary to replace it on October 13, 1962.
