Tower of the church, the nave disappears almost completely behind it

The Filialkirche St. Peter and Paul is the Roman Catholic village church of Tünzhausen in the municipality of Allershausen in the Freising district ( Upper Bavaria ). It was built at the top of a ridge at the transition from the Ampertal to the Tertiary hill country to the east . The church patrons are the two apostles Simon Peter and Paul .

tower

Originally the tower of the church was a Romanesque defense tower from the 13th century. The round arch friezes that adorn the tower at a height of around four meters are typical of this period. The small tower windows in all four directions are also typically Romanesque. Relics of the painting have been preserved on the eastern windows. The spire consists of a short eight-sided roof. Due to the extension from the Baroque period, the proportions of the tower and nave are no longer correct. Apparently there was no money to raise the tower.

There are five bells in the tower; the oldest is from 1922; the other four are from 1948. After the tower had lost its function as a fortification, the inhabitants of the village set up a chapel on the ground floor.

Nave

The chapel in the tower has been expanded again and again over the centuries; the current extension dates from 1664 and shows 4 round windows on each side that are typical of the Baroque era . The single-nave long building is oriented from east to west. The choir contains a groin vault that was decorated with stucco in 1715. The roof of the nave is closed off by a flat ceiling, which is also decorated with stucco. The sacristy was added to the rear.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is baroque. In the middle there is a large main altar with side altars from 1664. It shows the Mother of God as Queen, flanked by the two church patrons Peter (left) and Paul (right). Above the Maria there is a representation of Saint Leonhard . On the left side altar there is a figure of Saint Isidore , above it a representation of Saint Helena . To the right of the main altar is St. Sebastian , above St. James .

inner space

The large ceiling fresco was created in 1745 and is the work of Nikolaus Gottfried Stuber . It shows the veneration of Saint Leonhard. The selection of doctors of the church represented in the four corners is unusual. These are Gregory the Great , Ildefons of Toledo , Bernhard of Clairvaux and Anselm of Canterbury , all of whom are more or less connected to the Benedictine order - the Benedictine monastery Weihenstephan was the commissioner of the work.

history

The parish of Tünzhausen was assigned to the Weihenstephan Monastery since its establishment in the 11th century. With its dissolution in the course of secularization in 1803, Tünzhausen came to the parish of Sankt Josef in Allershausen. The parish has been the curate of the parish of St. Quirin in Kranzberg since 1815 .

In 1632 the church was sacked by the Swedes. During the Baroque period, the church developed into a pilgrimage church, in which Saint Leonhard in particular was venerated. There was even a brotherhood of their own to take care of the pilgrimages.
