The Roman Catholic Church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus is located in Holzgünz in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

History and description of the building

The church was rebuilt together with the Holzgünz Castle in 1586. The church forms the north wing of the castle. The choir has a 3/8 end and two window axes. The ceiling of the choir is a barrel vault with stitch caps on mask consoles. The nave is single-nave and has a coffered wooden ceiling. With the exception of the ogival windows on the south side of the choir, all other windows are round. Arched entrances lead into the churches on the north and south sides. On the west side inside there is a two-storey gallery on wooden supports. The parapets are decorated with decorative painting from the second half of the 18th century.

The high altar is a marbled wooden structure and was consecrated in 1695. The antependium is a canvas painting around 1720 depicting Christ with Mary from Mount Carmel with poor souls . The rotating niche tabernacle is surrounded by rotated free columns . The arched shrine niche is decorated with a group of figures consisting of the Madonna, angels and St. Simon floor surrounded. This is flanked by twisted free columns with larger than life figures of Saints Simon and Jude Thaddäus . The figures are crowned with canopy arches on which there are angels. The extension of the high altar bears the Marian monogram, framed by free columns and entablature.

The right side altar also has a canvas pendulum with flower painting. The side altar is made of dark painted wood with gilded leaf decoration and dates from around 1700. There is a reliquary in the base of the side altar . The altar niche contains a wooden figure of St. Joseph . This is made up of free columns and figures of St. Joachim and St. Anna flanked. The wooden figures of David and Solomon are probably located above the entablature. The pull-out niche above the side altar contains the wooden figure of St. Theresa of Avila .

The left side altar, like the right, contains a canvas pendulum with flower painting and is a marbled wood structure with gilded decoration and dates from around 1730. The tabernacle of the left side altar has the shape of a rock grave. The arched niche contains a wooden crucifix and the figure of St. Magdalena. To the side there are pilasters with the figures of Mary and John. The half- length figure of God the Father is in the extension of the side altar .

The pulpit dates from the end of the 17th century and is made of marbled wood. The polygonal basket is located on a curved console and is structured by twisted free columns. The fields of the basket contain small wooden figures of Jesus Christ and the four evangelists . The sound cover is crowned with an angel figure. The kneeling benches of the church are made of softwood and date from the second half of the 18th century. The children's chairs, consisting of two rows, date from around 1700 and contain leaf carving. The lay chairs come from the same time as the children's chairs. The two confessionals are made of softwood and date from the first half of the 18th century.

The ceiling paintings of the cycle of the choir vault were created in 1590 and exposed again in 1911. These show God the Father in the apex of the choir, the sacrifice of Abraham and the brazen serpent in the barrel vault . In the scrollwork frame and the vaulting the representations of Jesus Christ, Mary, the Archangel Michael , Isaia , Augustine, the Archangel Raphael , John the Baptist and St. Quiriacus . In the east of the choir arch are the representations of St. Anna selbdritt and St. Barbara, the Last Judgment from around 1590 is shown in the west of the choir arch . There are a number of paintings in the church. The 14 stations of the cross, as well as a Mother of God with the 14 helpers and the image of the Madonna from Mount Carmel as a helper in the hour of death date from the 18th century. Around the year 1700 the picture of the death of Joseph was created. The depiction of God the Father on a wooden panel was probably cut later and dates from the late 16th century.

The wooden figures represent St. Matthew, St. Peter and St. Anthony, all from the 18th century. The figure of St. Georg is designated 1613. St. Sebastian is from the late 17th century. According to the inscription on the console, the figure of St. Martin donated in 1615. The crucifix in the choir arch dates from around 1520/1530. The two reliquary busts in the sacristy represent St. Catherine and St. Barbara. Both date from the middle of the 18th century. The three procession poles each carry a wooden figure. These are from the time around 1570/80 St. Sebastian, around 1570 St. Christopherus and from the 17./18. Century a Mother of God. The two processional flags from the 18th century show the Madonna with St. Simon Stock, as well as St. Simon and St. Squidward. The 21 brotherhood poles with painted metal signs date from the 18th century.

In the church there is a grave slab made of Solnhofer stone for Benedikt Seiz († 1796). The deed of foundation of the Brotherhood of Mount Carmel is a print and marked with the year 1673.
