The Catholic parish church St. Stephanus in Roitzheim , a district of Euskirchen in the Euskirchen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was originally built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century erected. The church is a protected architectural monument .

history

The parish chronicle of Roitzheim begins as early as 1075, so it can be assumed that there was a church building some time before. Parts of it can still be found in the tower and in the north nave wall. In 1477 Gothic vaults were added to the choir , nave and tower .

In 1931 the ship was rebuilt by the architect Hans Jülich from Sindorf . The church was oriented to the north and the old nave was converted into a choir. A semicircular apse was added on the north side. The tower floor became a sacristy and the choir became a baptistery. The organ is located on the south wall empore . Today's church is a plastered building that is covered by a hipped roof that is set off several times .

architecture

The two-storey tower is covered by an eight-sided pyramid helmet. Narrow arched windows with house framing and a large arched window are inserted. Only the late Gothic additions have been preserved from the old church. The roofed entrance to the church is on the west wall. The church hall is characterized by a chamfered stucco ceiling with a profiled frame and a medallion with St. Stephen , the church patron , covered. The room is illuminated through arched windows with lead glazing . A narrow aisle is added to the west. One step leads to the barrel-vaulted choir with apse. To the right of this is the baptistery with the Romanesque font .

Furnishing

Wall paintings were discovered in 1888 . It is a cycle of apostles with the Mother of God as the central figure. The paintings were created in the 16th century. In the sacristy there are more paintings.

The baroque high altar with a representation of the Lord's Supper was acquired in 1970.

The heavily revised Romanesque font made of basalt lava dates from around 1100. It is 85 cm high and has a basin diameter of 80 cm. A heavy cylindrical block rests on a square base from which four three-quarter columns protrude. The four pillars of the foot correspond to four rigid, expressionless heads on the edge of the pool.

Pilgrimage

The Via Coloniensis from Cologne to Trier passes the Sankt Stephanus church. The Camino de Santiago then continues through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
