The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Stotzheim , a district of Euskirchen in the Euskirchen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was built in 1864/65. The church is a protected architectural monument .

history

The parish of Stotzheim was first mentioned in a document in 1316 in the Liber valoris . The predecessor of today's church was built at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1864 the number of Catholics in the village had grown to 1,300 and the church had become too small for the community. Therefore, the old church was demolished and a neo-Gothic building was built according to the plans of Vincenz Statz . The foundation stone was laid in August 1864, a year later the tower cross was erected and the church was consecrated on June 7, 1866 .

Due to the danger of the vaults collapsing , the church had to be closed in 1988 and the vaulted ceiling was completely renewed and the choir room was redesigned.

architecture

The brick building is a four-bay , groin-vaulted hall church with three naves . To the west, the fed, closed on three sides includes choir at. In front of the east is a four-storey tower structured by cornices and ogive wall panels. The main portal with a tympanum is located on the ground floor of the tower . On the bell floor there are pointed arched sound arcades and the tower ends with a pointed, eight-sided helmet .

The nave has two-lane pointed arch windows with simple tracery and stained glass . The pointed triumphal arch connects the church interior with the ribbed vaulted choir.

Furnishing

The church painter Gustav Fischer painted the church in 1876. The baroque side altars and the figures of saints were purchased between 1936 and 1941. In 1953 three new windows were installed in the choir because the old windows were destroyed in the war.

In 1969, as part of a comprehensive church renovation, the choir was redesigned, a new altar was erected and the windows of the nave were renewed. In 1979 three new bronze portals with scenes from the life of the patron saint , St. Martin , as well as built in with motifs from the custom of Martin . They were created by the sculptor Olaf Höhnen .

organ

The organ was made by the organ builder Franz Joseph Schorn (1834–1905) from Kuchenheim . It was installed in 1874 and enlarged and renovated in 1969 by Josef Weimbs .

The six bells were cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher and consecrated on November 1st, 1959.
