St. Wendelin is a Catholic church in Reilingen in the Rhine-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1901 and 1903 by Johannes Schroth in the neo-Gothic style.

history

Reilingen was first mentioned in 1286. Ecclesiastically, the place belonged to the Georg parish in Hockenheim . In 1446 the community in Reilingen built a chapel in honor of St. Wendelin . In 1451 it was already described as a church. In the same year the brotherhood of Saint Wendelin was founded in Reilingen . It was the only brotherhood in the Electoral Palatinate in which Elector Philipp and his family were members. In 1498 Reilingen received its own parish, the patronage right lay with the Electoral Palatinate. In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in his country . In the following period had Reilingen frequent Confession join until in the Palatine church division in the early 18th century, the church of the Reformed slammed. The Reilingen Catholics therefore had to go to church in Hockenheim until they were given permission in 1743 to use the basement of the town hall for church services.

In 1788 the Catholic community built a church. It was a hall building with a three-sided choir closure. Dilapidation and the increased population made a new building necessary a hundred years later. In 1889 the search for a suitable building site began. After two properties had been acquired in 1894 and 1899, construction began in 1901. In 1903 the community moved to the new Wendelinskirche, which was consecrated in May 1905 by Auxiliary Bishop Friedrich Justus Knecht . After the church was built, Reilingen was promoted to a parish curate in 1904 and finally to a parish in 1943 . In 2005 the parishes in Reilingen, Hockenheim and Neulußheim / Altlußheim merged to form the Hockenheim pastoral care unit. She belongs to the dean's office in Wiesloch in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .
