history
According to the local legend, St. Willibrord preached in Loverich in the 8th century and had a church built. However, there is no written evidence of this.
A priest named Gordert is mentioned in writing as pastor of Loverich for the year 1248. Thus there was already a church at that time, and Loverich was very likely already an independent parish . In 1253, the Archbishop of Cologne, Konrad von Hochstaden, donated the church to the Cologne Cathedral Monastery , and from then on the Cologne Cathedral Provost possessed the right of collation . 1550 it is mentioned that Puffendorf is a branch of the parish Loverich. During the 16./17. In the 19th century, however, Puffendorf was re-parish to Gereonsweiler .
The parish was significantly enlarged during the French era . In 1806 Puffendorf returned to the parish as a branch and in 1808 Beggendorf . Beggendorf became independent again in 1834 and Puffendorf in 1837. Since then, only Floverich has belonged to the parish.
On January 1, 2013, the parish of St. Willibrord Loverich, like all five other parishes in the urban area of Baesweiler, was dissolved after over 765 years of existence and merged into the new large parish of St. Marien. The church of Baesweiler was designated as the parish church of this new parish.
Building history
A church building already existed in 1248. This building, about which no details are known, was replaced between 1510 and 1525 by a two-aisled new building in the Gothic style . In 1944, the church was completely destroyed during World War II.
After the war, the Aachen architect Hubert Hermann was commissioned to plan a new church. The foundation stone for today's church was laid on September 3, 1950 , and the new church was completed in the following year. The solemn church consecration took place on June 29, 1951. At first the church did not have a bell tower, this was finally built in 1957. Structural changes were made in 1985 by redesigning the chancel according to plans by HD Brunn from Hückelhoven .
Building description
St. Willibrord is a two-aisled, flat-roofed step hall church made of bricks in modern shapes. The choir is just closing, the bell tower is built in front of the aisle. What is unusual for the construction time of the church building is that both the windows and the arcades to the side aisle are pointed arches.
Furnishing
The altar is a work of basalt and brick of Essen diocesan architect Heinz Dohmen and was on Dec. 20, 1987 consecrated . At the same time, Dohmen also created the tabernacle and ambo . The stone crucifixion group on the choir wall was in the Lousberg monastery in Aachen until 1950 and then came to Loverich. There are also sculptures of the 15 14 helpers in the church, which date from the 19th century. The organ from 1955 is the work of the Karl Bach Organ Builder in Aachen and has 18 stops. The stained glass windows were made in 1951 based on designs by Josef Höttges.
