history

1772 to 1789

The history of a public library in Bützow goes back to the year 1772. After disputes with the Rostock magistrate, Friedrich, Duke of Mecklenburg from the ducal part of the University of Rostock founded the Friedrichs-Universität Bützow in 1760 . He donated a large number of books for the associated university library and had the Krumme Haus expanded for their use in 1769, so that a hall library with an area of 200 m² was available.

In 1772 the Bützow University Library was officially opened as the first public library in Mecklenburg . The library was open to the public two days a week.

The library should be open every Wednesday from 2nd to 3rd, and on Saturday in summer from 2nd to 5th, but in winter from 2nd to 4th, except for those holidays, on which days everyone is closed to request loaned books half an hour before the opening and to deliver them again. "

The management of the library took over the German Orientalist and Professor Oluf Gerhard Tychsen , which in 1769 in the attic of the Schwerin Justizkanzlei the long-forgotten library of the dukes of Mecklenburg Johann Albrecht I , Adolf Frederick I and Christian Ludwig I found that in addition to a partial inventory of The pedagogy located in the episcopal castle in Bützow formed the center of the library in Bützow.

In 1789 the universities in Rostock and Bützow were united by Friedrich Franz I and all of Bützow's media and teaching holdings found their way into the Rostock University Library, which had so far had a considerably smaller inventory . At that time, the library in Bützow comprised a media inventory of around 14,000 printed books and 200 manuscripts.

Oluf Gerhard Tychsen then worked in Rostock as a supervisor of the academic collection and on expanding the library holdings.

1789 to 2000

Between 1789 and 2000 there were a large number of different public libraries in Bützow, the existence of which is documented, but often without detailed information about the foundation, its existence, the use and the duration of its existence:

  • the public library Bützow under the direction of the local pastor Chrestin with a stock of approx. 400 volumes (from 1847)
  • the public library (from 1920) with a stock of approx. 1,800 volumes (1938)
  • the lending library of Oertzen and Schloepke
  • the lending library of Otto Holzhausen's bookstore
  • the library of the municipal high school, which contained approx. 4,000 volumes (from 1860)
  • a high school library

After the Second World War , the holdings were also heavily decimated as a result of the purge of Nazi literature. In September 1949 the public library was reopened on the first floor of the town hall. It consisted of a room. In 1950 she had a book inventory of 1,155 volumes, there were 2,715 readers and 11,600 loans. In 1952 the company moved to Lange Straße 67.

As a result of the transformation of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania into three administrative districts on July 25, 1952 and the associated restructuring of the GDR's library system by the Ministry of Culture , the public library was renamed the Bützow city and district library in 1954.

In the following years the library moved further: 1956 to Lange Straße 38 (adult library) and Lange Straße 30 (children's library), around 1967 to Gartenstraße 28, 1981 to Schloss zu Bützow and 1991 to Straße Amfall No. 45.

With the district reform in 1994, as a result of which Bützow became part of the Güstrow district , the city library became the responsibility of the city of Bützow.

2000 until today

After the library moved out in 1789, the Krumme Haus was used in many ways before it was renovated from 1998 to 1999 and on January 1, 2000 the Bützow City Library returned to the location of the first public library in Bützow.

Today's city library is a modern public library that makes various analog and digital media available to its users. The city library has been part of the online loan network of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 2015 and enables e-books to be borrowed via the Internet.
