Stadtlandschaften is a documentary film by the DEFA studios for documentaries by Karlheinz Mund from 1982 .

action

The city in which we live is a man-made representational world that shapes our coexistence, whether we notice it or not. To get a picture of the city for yourself and for us is the concern of the three painters Konrad Knebel , Uwe Pfeifer and Klaus Magnus , who talk about their work in this film and each of whom sees the city very differently. They not only document the conditions and changes in a city, but are above all a form of dealing with the environment, living conditions and social relationships.

Konrad Knebel is considered to be the master of the urban landscape in Berlin art, who captures the old streets of his surroundings in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district in their very own charm with impressionistic painting culture in tempera and oil colors , although the streets arranged in a chessboard pattern are the same everywhere and therefore not seem very interesting. For Konrad Knebel, however, the houses are interesting because for him they have something like a face, which you can see from what they have experienced from childhood to today. These pictures are not only from Berlin, but also from Karl-Marx-Stadt and Zwickau , but he always stays with his subject.

The graphic artist Klaus Magnus, who lives on the outskirts of the big city in Berlin-Altglienicke , has given the cityscapes new possibilities of expression in large-format drawings using various graphic techniques. When the houses are decaying, he reads the traces of human fate. He has been constantly revisiting Berlin since he moved here years ago. He just doesn't know how long this desire will last, but as long as it persists, he has to get rid of it. The houses give him the freedom he needs to let his imagination run wild.

Uwe Pfeifer's design of the problematic relationships between the new living environment and the actions of people have become the subject of lively discussions. When he repeatedly depicts the passers-by between the modern new buildings and in the S-Bahn tunnels of Halle-Neustadt in bright artificial colors , then it is like an image of society that tries to hide its problems behind smooth facades.
