Wolfgang Schoor (born September 18, 1926 in Cologne ; † January 28, 2007 ) was a German composer who wrote orchestral works, song cycles and chamber music and the music for numerous children's films, documentaries and radio plays.

Life

Born in Cologne, the composer, conductor and accompanist learned the musical craft in private lessons at the Rheinische Musikschule Köln, at the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt am Main and at the Hochschule für Musik Köln.

He studied with Otto A. Graef (piano), Helmut Walcha (organ / harpsichord), Walter Henker (bassoon), Kurt Thomas (choir director, composition) and Günter Wand (conducting), as well as consultations with Karl Amadeus Hartmann .

Schoor worked from 1950 as a freelance composer, from 1949 to 1952 also as a music critic for the Kölnische Rundschau , moved to Weimar in the GDR in 1957 and wrote music for numerous documentary films here. He achieved national notoriety in particular through the compositions of the music for the documentary The Year 1945 and the theme song of the foreign policy GDR magazine Lens . In addition to numerous pieces of music for radio plays of various genres, Schoor composed song cycles, solo concerts and chamber music works in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. In the mid-1990s he settled in Wernigerode and composed extensive orchestral works here. He dedicated one of them to his adopted hometown.

His burial took place on February 10, 2007 in the cemetery in Treseburg .
