Stadtverkehr Tübingen (SVT) operates the city bus routes in Tübingen . As a corporate division of Stadtwerke Tübingen GmbH (swt), SVT is responsible for smooth public transport in Tübingen with currently 35 lines. Since 2002 the SVT has been integrated into the Neckar-Alb-Donau (naldo) transport association. Since January 1, 2011, the SVT has been providing more than 50 (later also more) percent of the mileage with its own buses and staff of the so-called TÜ Bus GmbH , the remaining mileage is provided by various bus companies on behalf of the SVT , as in the past .

history

Before 1945

After a first bus line connected Tübingen with Stuttgart-Degerloch from 1911 and buses ran between Tübingen and Nürtingen from 1912 , Tübingen received a bus route for the first time in 1927 that only operated within today's city limits. The Göppingen entrepreneur Robert Bauer received the concession for a bus line on the Pfrondorf - Lustnau - Tübingen - Derendingen route , which began operation in July 1927 with two vehicles and was extended beyond Derendingen to Weilheim in the same year , with 22 pairs of trips being offered . The company operating as Omnibusverkehr Tübingen started operating a second line as early as August 1927, which ran between Tübingen and Hagelloch .

In 1928 a connection followed from Tübingen via Hirschau and Wurmlingen to Rottenburg, which initially offered four daily trips and primarily served the citizens of the neighboring communities working in Tübingen. In the same year, a line to Wankheim , Mähringen and Immenhausen was set up beyond today's city limits , and Kusterdingen was also reached from April 1929 .

In January 1937 Robert Bauer, the previous managing director of Omnibusverkehr Tübingen, died. After negotiations with the local entrepreneur Paul Schnaith broke up, the concession and the company were taken over by Jakob Kocher from Dusslingen in May 1937 . Kocher initially used five buses, but increased the fleet in the same year and put another line into operation, which ran on the Westbahnhof - Hindenburgplatz (Lustnauer Tor) - Central Station - Burgholzkaserne - industrial district - Siedlung am Waldhörnle (garden city), but had to be discontinued after a short time due to insufficient utilization. At the same time, Paul Schnaith, who had previously operated a bus line from Tübingen to Böblingen serving workers 'traffic , was still active in bus traffic and received the concessions for further workers' traffic to Spaichingen , Vaihingen auf den Fildern , Möhringen auf den Fildern and Sindelfingen as well as for 1938 and 1939 the regular service to Genkingen-Erpfingen .

During the Second World War , bus traffic had to be severely restricted because the Wehrmacht confiscated buses without compensation for war purposes and fuel and other raw materials were scarce. However, the operation of the lines Lustnau - Derendingen and Tübingen - Mähringen - Immenhausen carried out by the Tübingen bus service could be maintained throughout the war, although the offer had to be restricted.

1945-1960

After the Post resumed the Tübingen – Stuttgart connection in July 1945 as the first line interrupted due to the war, a new concession for a Kayh - Tübingen - Lustnau line serving workers' traffic followed a short time later . At the same time, the recommissioning of city traffic and its expansion continued. The first line running exclusively within today's city limits, which was newly established after the war, ran from April 1947 between Tübingen, Lustnau and Bebenhausen , the seat of the Württemberg-Hohenzollern Landtag, and was served by the Schnaith company. From November of the same year, city buses also served the supply hospital on the sand.

In the 1950s, the urban area of Tübingen was greatly expanded through the development of the surrounding heights, which, despite the increasing number of private cars, led to greater use of bus transport, which was particularly noticeable in school traffic. In the aftermath of traffic difficulties at the bus stops at the main train station from 1952, plans began to build a new bus station . In the meantime, in August 1953, a new contract was signed between the city, which from then on held the line concessions, and the Schnaith and Kocher companies, which had previously served city traffic and were now responsible for its implementation on behalf of the city. In the newly designed Tübingen city traffic, buses painted in the city colors of red and yellow were used, which operated according to a regular schedule . From this point onwards, tickets also allowed passengers to change within the validity period and, as from now on, multi-trip and monthly tickets were also valid on the buses of both companies. As a result, the number of passengers rose annually by double-digit percentages, so that in 1958 1.4 million passengers were carried on a network of nine lines, which were numbered for the first time. In December 1960, the new bus station went into operation, which was located on the Postplatz in front of the main train station, which was now called Europaplatz.

In August 1960, the following routes from the main train station were used by Tübingen city traffic, but the individual line names are unclear:

Central station - Sparkasse - Rheinlandstraße - Weilerhalde - Hagelloch
Central station - Sparkasse - University - Frondsbergstrasse - Employer's liability insurance clinic
Central station - Sparkasse - University - Schönblick - Untere Viehweide / Virus Institute
Central station - Sparkasse - University - Sand supply hospital

Since 1960

Bus line 1 at the bus station

In the 60s and 70s of the 20th century , Tübingen continued to grow by expanding the settlement area, including in the form of the new Waldhäuser Ost housing estate on the heights north of the city. The Tübingen urban transport network followed this development by serving new residential areas, but at the same time there were increasing traffic problems in the city center and the historic old town caused by individual motorized traffic . A first departure from a policy favoring the private car came in 1971 with the establishment of the first pedestrian zones in the old town; in the following year, buses traveling from the bus station in the direction of Neckarbrücke were given a privileged lane at the confluence of Poststrasse and Friedrichstrasse. Diameter lines began running in 1974, and articulated buses began to be used in 1978 .

Priority through barrier-secured bus lock in the Herrlesberg district

As a result of a successful referendum carried out in 1979 against the construction of a new main road in the city center, which would have brought about lasting changes in the cityscape, the promotion of urban bus transport became a goal of Tübingen's local politics. This included giving priority to buses through bus lanes and special signaling, setting up a comprehensive network with a larger proportion of diameter lines and a dense cycle of 10 minutes on main lines and a maximum of 30 minutes on connections with lower demand. The line network designed in this way, which offered all citizens a stop within a 300 m radius, went into operation for the 1985 summer timetable and increased the operating performance of city traffic by 34%. From 1986 transferable monthly tickets, from 1989 annual tickets and student semester tickets were offered. The new offers were well received, with the result that the number of transport cases in city traffic increased by 40% within three years after the new bus system was installed. At the beginning of the 1990s, a district- wide joint tariff was created in cooperation with other bus companies .

In order to offset financial losses from urban traffic with profits from energy and water management, urban traffic was transferred to Stadtwerke Tübingen in 1995, which for this purpose founded the subsidiary Stadtverkehr Tübingen GmbH , in which the bus companies Kocher and Schnaith, which were commissioned to operate, also participate 12% each were involved. At the same time, the range of services was expanded further and improved with new lines, night-time services and compressed cycle times, especially in the evenings and on weekends. In addition, in 1995 the season tickets previously offered for students were replaced by a semester ticket with a solidarity fee to be paid by all students, which reduced the price of the actual ticket and caused a strong increase in demand.

Since the year 2000, tickets have no longer been sold in the vehicle by the driver, but via machines, which helps speed up operations. At the same time, a computer-aided operations control system was also put into operation, which, among other things, coordinates the prioritization of traffic lights. In 2002, Stadtverkehr Tübingen joined the newly established Neckar-Alb-Donau transport association , whose tariff has been in effect ever since. Stadtverkehr Tübingen GmbH , which coordinates urban traffic , was dissolved again in 2006 and integrated into the parent company Stadtwerke Tübingen GmbH as a branch, but this did not mean any changes for passengers.

City buses at the bus station

The route network of Stadtverkehr Tübingen consists of 22 daytime bus routes, which are supplemented by night bus routes and regular taxi services. The center of operations is the bus station on Europaplatz in front of the main train station , which is served by 20 of the day lines and all night buses and also serves regional traffic. The route network, together with the regional transport services provided by other companies, covers the entire urban area of Tübingen.

The number of people carried in 2006 was over 17.4 million. In 1995 this number was just over nine million, so that the number of passengers has almost doubled in the eleven years that have passed. Only 5.9% of the passengers used single, multi-trip or day tickets, while 40.6% were in possession of regular season tickets and 42.7% of the passengers used the semester ticket of the Neckar-Alb-Donau transport association . The remaining shares were accounted for by the severely handicapped, the use of regular taxis and the through tariffing of other operators.

In the “Public Transport Customer Barometer 2006” by TNS Infratest , Tübingen's city traffic came in fifth out of 26 participants. The passengers were therefore more satisfied than the industry average, with 56% more than half of them would not switch to other modes of transport even if they had the choice. According to the survey, the company's strengths lay in its range of lines, speed and frequency.

In mid-May 2010, deliberations became public that the municipal utilities, due to new EU regulations in tax law, should provide around half of the mileage with their own vehicles and drivers. This had a major impact on the two companies, which until then had provided most of the mileage on behalf of city traffic. With a resolution of the local council of October 4, 2010, the new operator concept was voted for. Then Stadtwerke Tübingen (with its newly founded subsidiary TüBus GmbH ) took over about half of the vehicles (approx. 40) and 70 to 80 drivers directly from the two previous partners and thus operated half of the traffic itself from 2011 onwards.

In 2013, more than 20 million passengers were carried in Tübingen city traffic on a route network of 335 kilometers. Around 2000 journeys are made in city traffic every day, serving 369 stops.

Day SAM

Lines 30–35, at times also lines 9, 11, 12 and 14 as well as individual trips on other lines in the outskirts of the day are served with line taxes, which are known as collective call rental cars (SAM). These trips are carried out according to the timetable, but must be ordered by telephone at least 30 minutes before the departure time. The line taxis stop at the stops on the route, on sections of lines 30, 31 and 34, and at any point along the roads served in the route. The normal naldo network tariff is used for SAM journeys, but for technical reasons certain types of tickets are not available or not valid.

The day SAM traffic is carried out by the Tübingen-based company Minicar Autovermietung GmbH on behalf of the SVT with cars and minibuses .

Night traffic

Tübingen city traffic operates ten night bus lines and one night taxi line every night between 00:20 and 03:40 a.m. (on Thu / Fri, Fri / Sat, Sat / Sun and before public holidays until 04:40) the city area as well serve the neighboring town of Rottenburg am Neckar . They run every hour, with connections to each other as well as to regional night traffic at the main station and in the city center. The night bus routes that operate within the urban area usually have travel times of around 30 minutes and are linked in pairs, so that two or three routes can be traveled within an hour, resulting in connections without changing trains.

Five more night buses operate in the regional area. The Tübingen city traffic also serves the nine night bus routes in Reutlingen i. A. the RSV .

Night SAM

The scheduled night bus traffic is supplemented by a night SAM system of registration traffic , which is operated every night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. After prior registration by phone no later than 30 minutes before the desired departure time, collective taxis create travel connections between five collective stops in the city center and any points in the rest of the city. Trips from the city center to the city districts are just as possible as trips in the opposite direction and trips between different city districts.

The departures take place at the collective stops in the city center, in the area of the core city as well as in Lustnau and Derendingen at minutes .00 and .30, in the districts of Bebenhausen, Bühl, Hagelloch, Hirschau, Kilchberg, Pfrondorf, Unterjesingen and Weilheim at minutes .15 and .45. Since the routes are planned at short notice according to optimal utilization, the actual departure times usually deviate from the specified times by a few minutes, with passengers having to wait on the roadside for the night SAM to arrive. For the same reason, not all passengers use the direct route. A special tariff is charged for using the night-time SAM, which is, however, reduced for holders of season tickets.

The operation of the night SAM, as well as the implementation of the daytime SAM lines, is the responsibility of Minicar Autovermietung GmbH , which provides cars and minibuses for this purpose.

Bus of the Omnibus Groß GmbH in Hagelloch

More than half of the mileage is provided by TüBus GmbH , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Tübingen. The remaining journeys are carried out by the company Omnibusverkehr Tübingen - Jakob Kocher GmbH , based in Tübingen and its Reutlingen subsidiary Wilhelm Lutz Omnibusverkehr GmbH, as well as Schnaith KM-Reisen Paul Schnaith & Cie GmbH , also based in Tübingen, with buses in the colors of city traffic Hold up Tübingen. Before the founding of TüBus GmbH on January 1, 2011, these companies provided the entire range of city traffic.

Excluded from this are the lines operated jointly with Stadtverkehr Tübingen by Rottenburger Omnibus Groß GmbH (line 18) and the DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee (line 19). For this purpose, these companies have buses painted in the colors of city traffic, which, however, also bear the respective company names prominently and whose interior design differs from the other city buses.

A total of around 70 buses of the brands Mercedes-Benz , VDL and Volvo are available for city traffic in Tübingen (as of 2017), all of which are low-floor . 40 of the 70 buses are operated by TüBus GmbH. At TüBus GmbH and private companies, buses of the types CapaCity , Citaro , VDL Citea , and Volvo 7900 are used.
