course

The river has its source in Chianti in the municipality of Radda in Chianti , province of Siena , approx. 15 km northwest of Siena , on the hill Poggio di Fonte Rutoli . After the spring municipality of Radda in Chianti, which it flows through for about 1 km, it reaches Quercegrossa (municipality of Monteriggioni and Castelnuovo Berardenga) and to the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, where it stays for 4 km. Then he stays another 4 km in the area of Castellina in Chianti, where the rivers Gena and Gagliano flow near the Rencine district, and eleven in the municipality of Monteriggioni, where it first enters north of Basciano and flows through the Badesse district. After Monteriggioni (district of Castellino Scalo) it then enters the municipality of Poggibonsi, where the Carfini flows in and which it runs through for a total of 15 km. Here it first passes the Staggia Senese district and flows into the Elsa near the city center of Poggibonsi.

The name Staggia comes from the word Stajo (later Staio , in the plural referred to as Staja or Staia ), an old unit of measurement for weighing grain similar to the Star , which was used in the Middle Ages on the market near the fortress (Rocca di Staggia Senese) .

The river gives its name to the district of Staggia Senese (Poggibonsi).
