Master list of the Lords of Lichtenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master list of the Lords of Lichtenberg gives an overview of a family that acquired extensive property in the lower Alsace and later on the right of the Rhine in the Strasbourg area in the course of the 13th and 14th centuries . When Jakob von Lichtenberg, the last male member without heirs, died in 1480 , his two nieces and their descendants each inherited half of the property: they were the heiress Anna and Elisabeth von Lichtenberg. Anna married Count Philipp I, the elder , von Hanau -Babenhausen. She founded the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg . The second niece, Elisabeth, married Count Simon Wecker von Zweibrücken-Bitsch . When this family also died out in 1570, their inheritance - and with it the second half of the ancestral Lichtenberg property - also passed to the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg.

origin

An Albert von Lichtenberg is attested in 1197 and in older literature he was regarded as the progenitor of the family. However, it is assumed with good arguments that he did not belong to the Alsatian family, but to the Palatinate Lichtenberger and was not related to the family described here. The first reliable family member is Rudolf von Lichtenberg , who is named in 1203 as the canon of the diocese of Strasbourg .
