Star Crossed ( port. Subtitles: Amor Em Jogo , dt .: Love the game) is a Portuguese feature film by the British director Mark Heller from the year 2009 . It is an adaptation of Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet in the modern football business .

action

Paul Collins is a young English football player who is playing his first season at Castelo, one of the city's two professional clubs. After a particularly violent derby against local rivals Invicta, both clubs are suspended from the league. Paul is then persuaded by some of his fellow players to sneak in on a gala hosted by rival Invicta that evening. There Paul meets the daughter of the Invicta president, Inês Silva, in whom the English journalist Alex Pierce is interested. He is actively supported by her father, who, as Invicta club president, hopes that positive reporting will give him an advantage in negotiations with the league about the re-admission of his club. Inês and Paul fall in love on the spot and secretly become a couple. In the hateful rivalry between the clubs, they put themselves in extreme danger. Inês dreams of happiness with Paul far from her authoritarian father and the dangerous club rivalry. Paul, who underestimates the overall danger, trusts the good-natured team doctor Dr. Lawrence on. With his help and that of Inês grandmother Carla, Paul and Inês begin to break out of the tight, merciless fetters that surround them. However, they get caught up in a series of tragic decisions that ultimately come to a head.

reception

In a close adaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet motif, the film shifts the sincere and unconditional love of a young, innocent couple into the all-encompassing and relentless rivalry between the two clubs, in line with the two warring families in Shakespeare's original work. The two fictional clubs Castelo and Invicta allude to the traditional rivalries in the big cities, which are equally known in Great Britain and Portugal. Invicta is also an alternative name commonly used in Portugal for the city of Porto, and the club color blue used in the film is also the color of FC Porto . The commercialization of football or possible cultural differences between the English and Portuguese actors are hardly discussed in the film.

The atmospheric old town streets and numerous picturesque backdrops of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Porto , partly in long aerial shots that contrast with the fast cuts of the football scenes, form the optical background .

Star Crossed had its cinema premiere in Portugal on June 4, 2009, and was released on DVD in 2010 , by ZON / Lusomundo (No. 1733/2010).
