The Oberwald reservoir is a dam in the area of the municipality of Callenberg in the Saxon district of Zwickau . It was created through the renaturation of the Callenberg Süd I opencast nickel mine .

Geographical location

The Oberwald reservoir is located in the southern municipality of Callenberg, directly north of the Hohenstein-Ernstthal junction of the federal motorway 4 . The body of water is located west of Chemnitz , east of Glauchau and north of Hohenstein-Ernstthal . To the east of the reservoir is the serpentinite quarry Oberwald in the Waldenburger Oberwald . Directly adjacent places are the Callenberg districts Reichenbach and Obercallenberg .

Emergence

The lake was created in 1982 from the remaining hole in the Callenberg Süd I opencast mine of the largest nickel ore deposit in Central Europe near Callenberg . The mine was in operation 1960-1977 and the industrial railway of nickel refinery St. Egidien with the nickel refinery St. Egidien connected. As early as May 20, 1971, the Hohenstein-Ernstthal district council decided to expand the Callenberg Süd I opencast mine into a local recreation center, today's Oberwald reservoir. At the end of the term, the north-south extension of this open-cast mine was around 900 m.

On the north side of the opencast mine, a rock embankment dam with a height of 5.6 m and a crown length of 250 m was built from around 25,000 m³ of waste material and 5,000 t of gravel. The water side was provided with a concrete seal. The source streams of the Erlbach were introduced from the Oberwald into the open-cast mine, so that today around 16 hectares of water can be dammed up around 0.53 million m³ of great bathing water when the water is completely blocked. The greatest water depth is about 10 m, depending on the water level, with an average of 3.5 m. After the work was completed in 1982, the first bathing season began on May 15 of the same year. The Zweckverband Achat bought the land of the industrial wasteland at the former opencast mine Callenberg Süd I in 1994 so that it could be used as a local recreation area. By a resolution of the district council of the district of Chemnitzer Land , the operation was passed into municipal ownership in 1997/98.

use

The lake is now a popular recreational area. It offers a 360 m long beach with a nudist area, a 64 m long water slide and boat rental. In addition, a 370 m long summer toboggan run was built south of the lake . There are hiking trails, campsites and bungalows in the area. The reservoir is managed by the Oberwald Tourismus und Sport GmbH reservoir.
