geography
Geographical location and traffic
Obercallenberg is located in the southwest of the municipality of Callenberg on federal highway 180 . South of the village is the federal motorway 4 with the junction "Hohenstein-Ernstthal". Although the place has always belonged to Callenberg, it is spatially separated southeast of the locality Callenberg between Grumbach in the west and Reichenbach in the north. The part of the "Obertirschhheim" settlement to the east of "Lichtensteiner Strasse" is located in the Obercallenberger Flur, directly at the "Hohenstein-Ernstthal" junction. The other part belongs to Tirschheim , district Kuhschnappel of the municipality of St. Egidien .
Obercallenberg is located west of the Oberwald reservoir , which arose from the disused opencast nickel mine "Callenberg Süd I". This former open-cast mine was connected to the now disused and dismantled section of the industrial railway of the St. Egidien nickel smelter , whose depot was in Obercallenberg.

history
The scattered settlement Obercallenberg was mentioned in 1798 as "Ober-Cahlenberg" and in 1830 as "Oberkahlenberg" or "Cahlenberger houses". With regard to the manorial rule , the settlement and the place Callenberg belonged to the manor Callenberg until the 19th century , which in turn was under the administration of the Schönburg rule of Waldenburg as a vassal court . Ecclesiastically and politically, Obercallenberg has always been part of Callenberg. After an administrative reform was carried out in the area of the Schönburg recession in 1878, Obercallenberg came as a district of Callenberg in 1880 to the newly founded Saxon administration Glauchau .
As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Obercallenberg came to the Hohenstein-Ernstthal district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 as part of the Callenberg community (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ). In the same year, in the corridors of the dissolved Bochmann estate in Obercallenberg, the nickel open-cast mine Callenberg Süd I , which was opened in 1982 as the Oberwald reservoir after its closure in 1977 , took place. Between 1959/60 and 1990 the industrial railway of the St. Egidien nickel smelter was in operation, the mine station of which was in Obercallenberg. After nickel mining was discontinued, a parking lot for the Oberwald reservoir was created on the site in 1990. As a relic of the ore railway, two wagons were left standing near the dam of the Oberwald reservoir. As a district of the municipality of Callenberg, Obercallenberg came to the Saxon district of Hohenstein-Ernstthal in 1990 , which was added to the district of Chemnitzer Land in 1994 and in 2008 to the district of Zwickau. The neighboring community of Reichenbach was incorporated into Callenberg on March 1, 1994.
