Stefan Kurath (born January 29, 1976 in Thusis ) is a Swiss architect and urbanist . He lives and works in Zurich and Graubünden.

Career

Stefan Kurath studied architecture at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur (ZHAW) and at the Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam. This was followed by a degree in landscape architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ). He received his doctorate in urban planning from the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) with the distinction summa cum laude. He researched and taught as a research assistant at the ETHZ, as a research assistant at the ZHAW and the University of Liechtenstein, as a lecturer at the HTW Chur and the University of Lucerne. Since 2012, Stefan Kurath has been teaching and researching as a professor of architecture and design in the architecture course at the ZHAW in Winterthur. Together with Peter Jenni, he is the winner of the CHF 10,000 CS-ZHAW award for outstanding teaching (2013 teaching award). In February 2014, Stefan Kurath and Regula Iseli took over the management of the ZHAW's Urban Landscape Institute from Max Bosshard . At the same time, Stefan Kurath works as a freelance architect and urban planner in Zurich and in an office community with Ivano Iseppi in Graubünden. He is the author of numerous articles on architecture, town planning and spatial research. He also gives guest lectures at universities in Switzerland and abroad and works as a guest critic.

The construction of the Viamala service station Thusis, the joinery hall Mani in Pignia, the visitor center of the Viamala gorge, as well as other smaller buildings were published internationally. Together with Ivano Iseppi, he is one of the young architects in Graubünden who are beginning to emancipate themselves from the important Swiss architects from the Canton of Graubünden such as Peter Zumthor , Bearth + Deplazes or Valerio Olgiati . In this regard, influences from stays abroad in the Netherlands and the examination of urban planning issues also reveal a distinct architectural language. In his research, Stefan Kurath focuses on the limits and opportunities of planning, the role of architects and urban planning practice. Among other things, his empirical work on the urban landscapes of today has been recognized by Thomas Sieverts , Hartmut Leser and Köbi Gantenbein . At the ZHAW's Urban Landscape Institute, Stefan Kurath deals in teaching and research with questions relating to the densification of urban landscapes and the development of inner cities. The institute focuses on three questions: How do architecture and the city actually come about? How can architecture be designed and the city planned? What is the role of architects in this? He also campaigns for the concerns of architects and urban planners in Switzerland in the digital media and the daily press and is a board member of the Zurich section of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA) and the Zurich Study Society for Construction and Transport Issues. It takes the political architect , summarizes his concern in this regard.

As part of the exhibition When Attitude Forms Space, curated by Daniel A. Walser and shown in Chur and Zurich . Young architecture from Graubünden , Stefan Kurath and Ivano Iseppi have their professional positioning with the text work Architecture does not exist! Captured for a political architecture . They call for a new approach to the issue of "architecture autonomy" with the aim of giving today's everyday landscapes a new contour. The focus is on working on the cultural expansion of the existing building, expressiveness in structure, form and shape, as well as direct and archaic materiality.
