The Steinbach is a stream in the urban area of Kirchberg an der Jagst in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in northeastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows from its right upper course Esbach and its left upper course Eselbach and after about two kilometers gorge to the southwest near the Hornberg an der Jagst district of opens into the middle Jagst on the right . Its two upper reaches originate in neighboring communities. Together with the Esbach or Eselbach, the Steinbach is each around six kilometers long.

Geographical maps name certain sections of the river in the Steinbach river system, in some cases different from the representation selected here. More details under →  Other names .

geography

Upper Esbach

The Esbach arises a little west of the hamlet Oberwind von Rot am See at about 425  m above sea level. NHN on a dirt road. From there it moves eastwards in a ditch between fields towards the hamlet, crosses it and turns behind it between fields to the southeast, before turning in a narrow ditch curve in the Harreswiesen district on the now steady southwest run. He crosses under the L 1040 from Rot to Kirchberg an der Jagst for the second time to the west of the red hamlet of Niederwinden, after which he changes there.

At alternating distances of up to 200 meters, its now noticeable hollow is followed by the state road on the left, while the ditch, which is now mostly accompanied by a loose row of trees and bushes, runs along the right side of the ditch. From the northeast, the stream experiences two tributaries, through the Maßenbach and then at the beginning of the village of Gaggstatt through the Engstenbach, both of which are around one kilometer long ditches that are created on the edge of forest islands.

Then the Esbach disappears for its last quarter of a kilometer in a twisting that roughly follows the route of Brunnenstrasse. One last time it crosses the L 1040 called here in the village of Raiffeisenstraße and flows underground with the left Steinbach upper course Eselbach at house No. 10.

The Esbach is about 4.0 km long and drops by about 42 meters in altitude on its course, its mean bed gradient is less than 11 ‰. Its catchment area is 4.4 km².

Upper Eselbach

The Eselbach arises on its western edge in the municipality of Wallhausen about 0.5 km south-south-west of the underpass of the B 290 ("Kaiserstraße") under the Crailsheim – Königshofen railway within an elongated corridor in the Gewann Brühl at about 426  m above sea level. NHN . The little noticeable ditch of this upper course, called Espach in the Wallhausen area , runs north out of the forest in the middle of the meadow bay. At the municipal boundary to Rot am See, it turns west and flows as a ditch along the edge of the field towards the red hamlet of Niederwind, where it swings to the south-west as it crosses.

From here on the right-hand side follows the road from Niederwinden to Gaggstatt and a row of trees accompanies him in sections. A little while ago in the Red Municipality, a small brook flows inconsistently from the Klinge , which runs in a narrow forest bar. In Gaggstatt he passes a small extinguishing water pond on the right across the street . A good hundred meters further it flows, now also twisted, with the Esbach.

The Eselbach is 4.2 km long, falls on this route by about 43 meters, its mean bottom slope is about 10 ‰. Its catchment area of 4.2 km² remains only slightly below that of the Esbach.

Course of the Steinbach

The at about 383  m above sea level. The Steinbach , created by the confluence of the NHN , flows approximately southwest and then comes to the surface at the end of Gaggstatt. This is where his shell limestone blade , typical of the Jagst tributaries in the area, begins , in which the L 1040 accompanies him on the right of the barrel. After a first meander bend in the valley, the short Engertal flows from the east, the Engertalbach running through it previously pulls on the flat plateau like the previously mentioned upper reaches and tributaries. At the tributary, the K 2511 branches off the state road to Hornberg , which rises over the short, notch-shaped side valley to the left shoulder of the Steinbach.

From now on the Steinbach runs over wide and mostly not very high limestone banks in a steeply deepened forest valley. It will soon pass the Hornberg hammer mill on the left bank. Only after a few small turns in the valley and about 700 meters further down are the first houses of the small valley settlement of Hornberg on the bank. 2.0 km below the confluence of its two upper courses, the Steinbach is spanned by the bridge of the Mühlweg, then it flows out at 336.3  m above sea level. NHN from the right at the district boundary to the central Kirchberg in the middle Jagst , between the Schlossberg ( 390.3  m above sea level ) with the Hornberg Castle on the left and the right Talsporn ( 386  m above sea level ) with the ruins of the Sulz Castle .

On its course, mostly in its deeply cut gorge, the Steinbach falls by about 47 meters in altitude, the mean bottom slope reaches about 24 ‰.

Catchment area

The Steinbach has a catchment area of 11.7 km², to which its two large overflows each contribute over 4 km². Its predominant north-eastern and upper part lies naturally down to Gaggstatt in the lower area of the Blaufelden-Gerabronner level of the Hohenloher and Haller level , of the rest, which is part of the Kocher-Jagst levels , the majority is in the sub-area of Bartenstein-Langenburger Platten , the small mouth gussets in the middle Jagsttal .

The total watershed borders in turn on the neighboring catchment areas

At about 472.9  m above sea level. NHN's highest point of the catchment area is on the southeast corner on the crest of the K 2509 Gaggstatt – Wallhausen on the southern edge of the Hornberg Forest . Its largest area is in the lower, south-western part of the town of Kirchberg an der Jagst , and a slightly smaller area in the north and north-east of that of the municipality of Rot am See . In the east, a narrow and unpopulated strip, mainly in the forest, belongs to the municipality of Wallhausen .

There is forest on around one and a half square kilometers of the catchment area, mostly on the eastern and north-western edge of the catchment area and, for the most part, in and on the narrow Unterlaufschlucht gorge. On the remaining plateau, which occupies the vast majority of the catchment area, mostly fields are cultivated.

other names

Other names are also found for some sections of the river in the Steinbach tributary system. They are given here with reference to the terms used above:

  • The official river map shows the Steinbach does not begin at the confluence of Esbach and Eselbach, but just 100 meters further up the Esbach. Since on this map - to be noted, for example, when the main line name selected there is the same as the local name - there are often minor inconsistencies between the dimensions of the two relevant layers, which are probably due to partly older and independent measurements, it was assumed here that the name change shortly before the confluence is only due to a coincidentally somewhat too large running interval for the Steinbach section.
  • The name Steinbach on the section from the confluence of Esbach and Eselbach corresponds to the labeling on the topographic map. This designation already appears in the description of the Oberamt Gerabronn from 1847: "the Steinbach near Gaggstatt", "‚ the Sulz Castle and the mountain umb and umb with the dumps up to the Steinbach and from there to the outer Lohe . '”(Quotation from 1399),“ the gorge beginning near Gaggstadt and ending next to the castle, the Steinbach's blade ”.
  • In contrast, the website of the small town of Kirchberg an der Jagst names the Unterlauf twice as Esbach and the short street to the left of the Steinbach Unterlauf, which starts well below the hammer mill in the blade and leads through the valley settlement of Hornberg to the mouth, is called Esbachweg . This is perhaps a more recent name from the time after the community reform , in the course of which Gaggstatt with its hamlet Mistlau came to Kirchberg in 1972 and also Hornberg with an underflow section of the Steinbach. In Mistlau there is another Steinbach and a Steinbachstraße . Here, a distinction between the two streams and streets could have made sense for administrative and postal reasons, even against the previous or still existing language usage.
  • On another map at the municipal level , the uppermost section of the Esbach from the entire Esbach → Steinbach line to the municipal boundary between Rot and Kirchberg is named Harresgraben , probably after the Harreswiesen , through which the Esbach previously made its turning curve. The section after that to the confluence with the Eselsbach out to the end of Gaggstatt, possibly even to the tributary of the Engstenbach, is called Wadesbach here , probably a little north of Gaggstatt after the Wades . After this section the run is called Steinbach here too .
  • The official waterway map names the Engeltalbach tributary flowing from the Engertal . This spelling is probably due to a mistake when reading the winning name; the name for the stream could have been derived from the supposed valley name for the first time on this map.

Localities

In addition to the riverside towns of Oberwind, Niederwind, Gaggstatt, Hammermühle and Hornberg mentioned in the descriptions of the Esbach, Eselsbach and Steinbach rivers, there is only the Waldeck settlement in the catchment area, a group of Aussiedlerhof in the Gaggstatt district of Kirchberg near the Lichsenbach tributary of the Engertalgraben.

geology

Geologically, the Esbach rises in a quaternary layer of loess sediment around upper winds . Immediately after the village, this upper course reaches the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ), which is located on most of the catchment area.

The Espach / Eselbach, on the other hand, rises at almost the same height, but one level lower in the sequence of layers in the Upper Muschelkalk . On its initial north course, it abruptly changes over a fault line and for a short distance to the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld Formation ), which is tectonically but deeply offset , and then also remains in the Lettenkeuper on its long southwestern stretch to Gaggstatt.

The actual Steinbach itself runs entirely in the Upper Muschelkalk, which begins at the end of Gaggstatt. Its blade, which runs to the southwest in continuation of the short Engertal, which is also located in the shell limestone, follows the above-mentioned, long fault line in the course of the so-called Franconian furrow , which runs uninterrupted from Espach slightly to the left of the middle and lower Eselbach and in the area of the urban settlement zone Kirchberg converges with the Kirchberger Fault running northwest to the left of the Jagsttal . This disturbance next to the Eselbach initially displaces Gipskeuper, as mentioned, later until the entry into the Engertal Lettenkeuper on the northwestern Tiefscholle opposite continuously Upper Muschelkalk on the southeastern Hochscholle, then in the area of the Steinbach-Klinge mostly deeper against higher Upper Muschelkalk. A little south-east of it, the ascent to the watershed leads to the higher layers of the Lettenkeuper and even a loess sediment island in the Hornberg Forest . At the edge of the Hornberg Forest there is a group of sinkholes that are protected as a natural monument ; as is often the case in the surrounding area, in the Lettenkeuper smear it is slightly above the Upper Muschelkalk.

Protected areas

The Steinbach-Klinge belongs in parts to the landscape protection area - part of the protection area Jagsttal with side valleys between Crailsheim and Kirchberg , in others to the landscape protection area Middle Jagsttal with side valleys and adjacent areas .
