The stone head is a 353.2  m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur in the southern part of the Reinhardswald low mountain range in the district of Kassel , Hesse ( Germany ).

In addition, there is the Steinkopf in the Reinhardswald in the northwest part of the Reinhardswald estate and the Fuldataler Steinkopf .

The Steinkopf is the outermost eastern foothill of the Gahrenberg ( 472.1  m ) in the southeast part of the community-free area Gutsgebiet Reinhardswald . The border with Lower Saxony runs at its eastern foot , where in the valley of the Weser the to Hann. Münden in the district of Göttingen belonging to the Hilwartshausen monastery estate . The small “Trockenene Ahle” flows to the north and the short “Piepengraben” coming from the “Prinzenquelle Sandborn” flows south, each of which flows into the Weser, which runs south-northwards.

The Steinkopf belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (No. 37) and in the main unit Solling, Bramwald and Reinhardswald (370) to the sub-unit Reinhardswald (370.4). The landscape falls to the east into the subunit Weser breakthrough valley (370.3).

Hiking and traffic

East past the heavily wooded Steinkopf, which belongs to the "Staatsforst Gahrenberg", runs in the Reinhardshagen −Hann section . Münden the hiking trail Märchenlandweg and southwest in the section Gahrenberg – Hann. Münden the Reinhardswald-Ostweg . In the deeply incised Wesertal, the “Sleeping Beauty Route” of the German Fairy Tale Route is laid out in the first-mentioned section within the framework of federal highway 80 .

To the west of the Steinkopf, at an intersection of the Reinhardswald-Ostweg, stands the striking Kaspar's tree, under which, according to legend, a prince's personal flute player sat to play for him during the midday rest.
