The stone head is about 250  m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur in the southern part of the Reinhardswald low mountain range in the district of Kassel , Hesse ( Germany ).

In the Reinhardswald there is also the Steinkopf in the northwest part of the Reinhardswald estate and the Steinkopf in the southeast part of the Reinhardswald estate .

The Steinkopf is located in the municipality of Fuldatal between Knickhagen to the southwest and Wilhelmshausen to the east . It rises as the extreme south-southwest foothills of the Gahrenberg ( 472.1  m ) above the Osterbach to the west, which flows into the Fulda , which passes south of the mountain . A forest path crossing, which is located in the rising terrain of the Reinhardswald around 150 m north of its crest, is located at an altitude of 262.6  m .

The medieval Knickhagen Castle once stood on the south-south-west slope .

Natural allocation

The Steinkopf belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (No. 37) and in the main unit Solling, Bramwald and Reinhardswald (370) to the sub-unit Reinhardswald (370.4). The landscape falls to the south into the subunit Mündener Fulda-Werra-Talung (370.6).

Protected areas

Parts of the landscape protection area Unteres Fulda ( CDDA -Nr. 378710; designated 1973; 13.4783  km² ) and the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Termenei near Wilhelmshausen (FFH-Nr. 4523-304; 28.32  ha ). In addition, the Termenei nature reserve extends on the elevation with significant heather deposits.

Hiking, traffic, leisure

To the northeast, past the Steinkopf, which is part of the Gahrenberg state forest , runs the Holzhausen- Fulda valley section of the Brüder-Grimm-Weg hiking trail . Landesstraße  3239 leads south around the mountain spur and connects Knickhagen with Wilhelmshausen. Near the dome there is a camping and barbecue area as well as a shelter.
