Stephan Braunfels is the great-grandson of the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand , grandson of the composer Walter Braunfels and son of the art historian Wolfgang Braunfels .

From 1970 to 1975 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich . In 1978 he founded his own architectural office in Munich, and in 1996 in Berlin. In 2004 he was appointed professor for urban planning at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin (TFH Berlin).

In 1984 he presented an urban design for the Munich Hofgarten . Braunfels saw it as an alternative to the conversion of the Army Museum into the Bavarian State Chancellery for the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss and his successors.

Braunfels designed the Pinakothek der Moderne from 1995 to 2002 . Construction defects appeared on the building early on, for which Braunfels assigns responsibility to the Free State of Bavaria ; During the 2013 renovation, the museum had to close for eight months. The second construction phase planned by Braunfels, which will enclose the museum in the south and east and contain additional rooms for the State Graphic Collection, was postponed in 2010 due to lack of money, also because the building of the Brandhorst Museum was brought forward. In 2017, a lawsuit by the architect in the dispute over the architectural competition for the planned new Munich concert hall was rejected because it was not included in the competition.

Other important projects were the new parliament building of the Paul-Löbe-Haus in Berlin in 2001, the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (parliamentary library) in Berlin 2002/2003, and the Neue Mitte in Ulm from 2004 to 2006. In September 2016 the architect announced that he had terminated the contract with the federal government and sued them for compensation for outstanding payments. The federal government rejected the claims and declared the termination to be ineffective.

In 2012, the new building of the local Volksbank was completed in the old town of Gifhorn .

In the 2010/2011 season, Braunfels designed the set for a production of the opera Ulenspiegel, composed by his grandfather, at the Landestheater Altenburg .
