Stephan Pöttken (* 1724 in Münster ; † July 19, 1795 ) was a Cistercian monk , priest and abbot of the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

Stephan Pöttken was born Anton Caspar Pöt (t) ken in Münster in 1724 . He entered the Marienfeld monastery on June 1, 1746 and was dressed there on August 14 of that year. After a year he made his profession on August 20, 1747.

He began his church career on November 9, 1762 as a chaplain in Harsewinkel . He then worked as a pastor in Bersenbrück from March 2, 1769 . In April 1774 he became a Confessary in the local monastery and in the same year also a pastor in Greffen .

For Abt he was elected canonically on 12 October 1784th He received his ordination on June 5, 1785 by Wilhelm von Alhaus (titular bishop of Arad , auxiliary bishop in Münster). Ludger Zurstraßen , Abbot of Liesborn Monastery , and Philip de Meuseren, Provost in Clarholz , assisted. On January 15, 1786 he was appointed vicar general of the order on the Lower Rhine by the order general Francisco Trouvé .

Under his chairmanship on December 18, 1792, one of the four chief abbots, namely the Abbot of Morimond from France, found refuge in the Marienfeld monastery . Together with his brother, he stayed in Marienfeld until August 25, 1793. Then they went to the Cistercian monastery Kamp in the diocese of Cologne .

The venerable abbot Stephan Pöttken gave up his office on April 22, 1794, decrepit and almost completely blind. He died in the Rengering women's monastery on July 19, 1795. He was also buried in the monastery church there.

The abbot's seal shows a split coat of arms. The right side is adorned with a sloping chess bar, the left side with a flower pot (= pot) with three flowers. Another well-known seal shows a shield divided into four; 1 and 4 show a cross, 2 and 3 again the flower pot. The Cistercian crossbar is shown in the heart shield . A miter hovers over the shield.
