Stephen Antony Pillai

Stephen Antony Pillai (born June 22, 1952 in Keezha Manakudy ) is an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Tuticorin .

Life

Stephen Antony Pillai studied at Arul Anandar College in Madurai and at St. Paul's Seminary in Tiruchirapalli after attending the boys' seminary . On May 7, 1979 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Vellore .

After working as a chaplain in pastoral care, he studied from 1981 to 1983 at the Pontifical Seminary of St. Peter in Bangalore , where he obtained a master's degree in theology. Then he was pastor in Thachambadi . From 1986 to 1989 he went for further studies in biblical theology in Rome, at the where he Pontifical Urban University for Dr. theol. received his doctorate . From 1990 to 1996 he worked as a missionary in the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe and then headed the diocesan pastoral center of the diocese of Vellore until 1999. From 1999 to 2001 he taught at the seminary in Tiruchirapalli, where he again worked as a lecturer and subregens from 2006 to 2010 . From 2001 to 2005 he was cathedral pastor at the cathedral of Vellore and since 2002 also vicar general of the diocese. From 2010 to 2016 he was pastor and dean in Chetpet . He then worked for a year as a visiting professor at the religious seminars in Chennai and Mysore . In 2017 he took over the management of the diocesan retreat center and was again a lecturer at the seminary in Tiruchirapalli.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Tuticorin on January 17, 2019. The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor Yvon Ambroise on 24 February of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Madurai , Antony Pappusamy , and the Bishop of Vellore , Soundaraj Periyanayagam SDB .
