Stephen Sunday Obayan (born September 17, 1988 in Lagos , Nigeria ), better known by his stage name Sunny or Sunny Obayan , is a Nigerian - Spanish football player .

Career

In his home country Nigeria, Sunday played in various clubs before taking part in two youth tournaments in Sweden and Spain in 2003 with his club FC Ebedei . The last of the two took place in Madrid and he was so convincing that Polideportivo Ejido signed him. In 2005 "Sunny" signed his first professional contract with the second division team. He became a regular straight away and played a total of 55 games for his club. Due to his good performance some European top teams became interested and let Sunday be watched. Among others, Liverpool FC , Real Madrid , Deportivo La Coruña , Valencia FC , Real Betis and SSC Napoli wanted to sign him . He decided to join Valencia CF in the summer of 2007. There he did not get beyond the reserve role and was finally awarded, in the 2008/09 season to the CA Osasuna and in the next season to Betis Sevilla . He was only used sporadically at these two stations.

Another year later, in the second half of the 2010/11 season , he was loaned to the second division CD Numancia until the end of the season. There he played in the regular formation and was finally equipped with a permanent contract in the summer of 2011.

After spending six months at FC Bnei Sachnin in 2013 , he moved to CSKA Sofia in early 2014 , where he signed a contract until June 2016.

In the summer of 2015 he moved to the Turkish TFF 1st Lig to Alanyaspor . After half a season he left this club for Real Salt Lake .

National team

Despite being a native Nigerian, Sunday decided to play for the Spanish national team. So far he has only been used in the youth teams there. With the U-20 he took part in the 2007 U-20 World Cup in Canada .

In accordance with the FIFA Statutes, he was able to make a new choice when choosing the senior national team. Since he had no prospect of a nomination in the Spanish team , he decided to play for his home country. He made his first appearance in qualifying for the 2012 African Championship against Guinea .
