Stephen Sykes

Stephen Whitefield Sykes (born August 1, 1939 in Bristol , † September 24, 2014 ) was a British Anglican theologian and university professor . He was Bishop of Ely in the Church of England from 1990 to September 1999 .

Life

Sykes was educated at St John's College of Cambridge University . There he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts . He also obtained a Master of Arts there (Oxbridge and Dublin) . In preparation for the priesthood he studied theology at Ripon College Theological College in Cuddesdon , near Oxford . In 1964 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1965 he was ordained a priest . From 1964 to 1974 he was a lecturer ( Lecturer ) in the subject of theology at Cambridge University, first as Assistant Lecturer in Divinity (1964-1967), then as Lecturer in Divinity (1967-1974). As dean he was responsible for the chapel of St John's College, Cambridge, in particular for the services. In 1974 he was appointed Van Mildert Professor of Divinity at the University of Durham and worked as a professor in theology. At the same time he took office related a Residenzkanonikers ( residentiary Canon , Canon) at the Durham Cathedral . In 1985 he returned to Cambridge University and took over the chair of Regius Professor of Divinity ; at the same time he became, connected with it, a member of the cathedral chapter and canon at Ely Cathedral . From 1980 to 1985 he was Chairman of the North of England Institute for Christian Education (NEICE). From 1985 to 1990 he worked as vicar ( curate ) at St John the Evangelist's Church in Cambridge .

In late February 1990 his election as the new Bishop of Ely was announced. On May 2, 1990, he was, according to the provisions of the Book of Common Prayer , in the Southwark Cathedral for the Bishop ordained. On May 5, 1990 he was enthroned in the Ely Cathedral. Sykes was, from 1990 until his resignation on September 1, 1999, the 76th Bishop of Ely in the Church of England , succeeding Peter Walker . He was succeeded as Bishop of Ely in May 2000 by Anthony Russell . Sykes was from 1991 a member of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England ; 1996-2001 he was the Chairman ( Chairman ).

Sykes returned to the University in September 1999 and became Principal of St John's College, University of Durham; he held this office until August 2006. After his retirement he served as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Durham .

Sykes has written numerous books and articles on religious and canonical topics. In 2002 he received an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich . In October 2009 he received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of Cambridge .

In 1962 he married his wife Marianne Hinton. The marriage resulted in three children, a son and two daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

Sykes served in his capacity as Bishop of Ely from August 1996 to July 1999 as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords .

A total of 17 contributions by Stephen Sykes from 1997, 1998 and 1999 are documented in Hansard . He gave his inaugural address on November 12, 1997 in the context of a debate on university policy . On July 8, 1999, he last spoke during his tenure in the House of Lords.
