Steven Sotloff

Steven Joel Sotloff (born May 11, 1983 in Miami , Florida , † August or September 2014 ) was an American - Israeli journalist who, like his colleague James Foley , was murdered by terrorists from the Islamic State organization .

Life

Sotloff grew up in Florida. During his schooling he attended a high school in Meriden in the state of New Hampshire . There he developed an interest in writing and worked for the school newspaper. From 2002 to 2004 he studied at the University of Central Florida , where he graduated as a journalist. He then worked as a freelance journalist for Time magazine , the British Christian Science Monitor and Foreign Policy magazine , among others . Sotloff reported from Egypt , Bahrain , Libya , Turkey and most recently from Syria . There he was apparently abducted on August 4, 2013 near Aleppo .

On August 19, 2014, Steven Sotloff was seen in a video published on YouTube that showed the beheading of James Foley by a masked terrorist from the Islamic State organization and then threatened with the "execution" of Sotloff. A video allegedly showing Sotloff's beheading by Jihadi John was released on September 2, 2014. The US government confirmed its authenticity. The same video also showed how the terrorists threatened the murder of the British David Cawthorne Haines they kidnapped . As before with Foley, British forensic scientists questioned the authenticity of the video. Forensic experts at the US National Center for Media Forensics in Denver were of the opinion that the only rudimentary killings of Foley and Sotloff were not authentic, but the pictures of the decapitated corpses were.

The US President Barack Obama announced after Sotloffs to murder, the US will not be intimidated by the "horrific violence" and do the course of justice.
