The Holidays in Monument Foundation ( Fondation Vacances au coeur du patrimoine , Fondazione Vacanze in edifici storici ) in Zurich , founded in 2005, takes over historically valuable buildings, renovates them and rents them out as holiday apartments . It is a non-profit organization of the Swiss homeland security and has had the ZEWO seal of approval since 2013 .

Purpose and activities

The foundation is committed to the preservation of historically valuable buildings throughout Switzerland and thus contributes to intact cultural landscapes and townscapes. The carefully restored objects are made available to the public by renting the houses for holidays at moderate prices. Many of the architectural monuments are in remote regions. A vacation in the monument creates a basis for sustainable tourism there and brings long-term added value to these regions, which are often affected by emigration.

In our own opinion, this model offers various advantages:

  1. The building can largely be retained in its original state and is being revitalized. The standard for an apartment can be kept simple.
  2. The running costs for maintenance can be covered with the income from the rental.
  3. The apartments should not only provide a place to stay, but also a holiday experience. A stay in the monument creates the opportunity to experience traditional building culture up close and thereby establish a connection to local and regional history and tradition. This increases awareness of building culture.

The offer has been continuously expanded. In addition to alpine wooden houses, there are craft and farm houses or town houses owned by the foundation.

History and organization

The basic idea for this organization was launched in 1995 by the former President of Homeland Security, Caspar Hürlimann, at a meeting of delegates. The National Trust in England just celebrated its 100th anniversary and inspired him. In 2002, the then managing director of the Swiss Homeland Security, Philipp Maurer, picked up the idea again and implemented it. Research came across the Landmark Trust , which was already doing specifically in England what it was now trying to achieve in Switzerland. Ferien im Baudenkmal was finally founded and donated in November 2005 by the Swiss Homeland Security (SHS), the voluntary organization. It is a non-profit organization and has been operating since 2008. It is legally independent of the SHS, but advocates its values and is supported in administrative tasks by the SHS. The five to seven-member board of trustees consists of representatives from relevant areas (homeland security, tourism, fundraising, architecture, etc.). In addition, the foundation is advised by an advisory board . The foundation's office is located in Villa Patumbah in Zurich, where the Swiss Homeland Security is also located. In 2010 the Stiftung Ferien im Baudenkmal was nominated for the Milestone Tourism Prize Switzerland , a joint award from Hotelrevue, the Federal Office of Economics ( SECO ) and the Swiss Tourism Association for projects in Swiss tourism that are considered to be particularly innovative.
