Russo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Russo is an Italian family name as a variant of Rossi .

Origin and meaning

It is particularly widespread in the south of Italy (today due to migration also in the industrial centers in the north), while Rossi predominates in the north. It is also the second most common surname in Italy; Rossi is number one.

At least some Russos derive their name from the Norman Count Hugo the Red (Ugone il Rosso, 12th century, Sicily). Be it that this is to be understood as a legend, be it that there are specific indications for it: With so many namesake it is to be expected that the name has emerged several times in different, unrelated families. The name means "red" and mostly refers to the hair on the head or the beard. German equivalents are therefore the names Roth and Fuchs .
