Fox (family name)
Fuchs is a German family name .
Origin and meaning
The family name Fuchs belongs to the group of nicknames (property names ) and is one of the most common in Germany . In the Middle Ages, it was used to describe a personal characteristic of the bearer of the name. This could refer to the red hair color, to the preoccupation with foxes (hunting, clothing), but also to a special shrewdness (smart as a fox). Occasionally a house name ("Zum Fuchs") passed on to the owner.
