Carl Ludwig Fuchs

Carl Ludwig Fuchs (born October 2, 1945 in Aken ; † August 11, 2019 in Leipzig ) was a German art historian . He became known as an expert in jewelry, silver and historical watches , especially through the show Kunst und Krempel on Bavarian television .

Life

Carl Ludwig Fuchs grew up in Aken. His mother came from own statements according to a line of the Isenburg noble family . One of his ancestors is said to have been Prince Leopold von Anhalt Dessau , known as the "Old Dessauer". For political reasons, the family left their home in Anhalt in the mid-1950s and settled in Korbach in Hesse .

Fuchs studied art history at the Universities of Marburg , Vienna and Hamburg , in 1976 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg under Peter Anselm Riedl on the restoration of the Schwetzingen Palace . In 1978 he began to work as a research assistant, later as head of the department for arts and crafts and history of the Electoral Palatinate and Baden, and from 2004 as deputy director at the Electoral Palatinate Museum in Heidelberg . In his almost thirty years of activity, he has significantly shaped the appearance of the museum. In 2002, with the support of the Kulturstiftung der Länder and numerous private sponsors, he succeeded in purchasing the Palatine silverware from Electress Elisabeth Augusta . The museum received international attention through the establishment of a collection of Frankenthal porcelain , which he directed .

Because of its broad-based art history, conservation and restoration skills, he was with the remodeling and designing the interiors of Schwetzingen Palace, the house Buhl in Heidelberg, the interior of the Rohrbacher castle in the style of Baden Grand Duchess Amalia , the Amalienborg Castle in Munich , the new Castle in Bayreuth and Castle Ballenstedt . After his retirement in 2007, he worked as a freelancer in the Wörlitz Palace Administration and, together with the art historian Kristina Schlansky, played a major role in the restoration of Mosigkau Palace and Luisium Palace .

He was also known as an expert in antique jewelry, silver and furniture.

Since 1993 he has been seen regularly in the show Kunst und Krempel as an expert, especially for jewelry, which is broadcast on Bavarian television . In addition to television appearances at Kunst und Krempel , he was portrayed in the Alpha-Forum at ARD-alpha and in 2013 had an appearance in the documentary Spur der Schätze - Teufelswerk im Gotteshaus - Der Kunstraub von Klieken . As an expert in jewelry, watches and objets d'art, he was part of the team at the expert office for art, antiques and high-quality household goods from Poschinger, Ottomeyer, Fuchs and Partner in Riemerling .

For his services Carl Ludwig Fuchs was awarded the Grand Cross of the Ascanian House Order Albrecht the Bear by Eduard Prinz von Anhalt ; he held the function of chief of protocol in the order until his death.

He was the owner of the only original baroque house in Dessau, the Palais Minckwitz , in which he lived with his partner until the end.

Fuchs, whose health had deteriorated since early summer 2019, died in August 2019 in the Leipzig Heart Center . There is a daughter from the first marriage. He leaves a husband.

To commemorate his work, Bayerischer Fernsehen broadcast a series of art and clutter dedicated to him on August 17, 2019 , which consisted of an obituary and four selected art consultations with Fuchs.

Carl Ludwig Fuchs was buried at his own request in Aken, his birthplace.
