The stick sponges ( Kuehneromyces ) are a genus of fungi from the family of the Strophariaceae relatives .
features
The stick sponges are small to medium-sized agaric mushrooms with brownish-yellowish, slightly hunched, thin-fleshed hats. The cap skin is bare, greasy, shiny and hygrophan (becoming wet and blotchy). The light brownish lamellas are a bit downward or broad, they are never free. The stem is central, it can be scaly or smooth and can have a membranous, permanent ring (common stick sponge) or be ringless (less often with ring remnants) (smooth-stemmed stick sponge). The spore powder is brown, the spores are ellipsoidally trimmed and have a germ pore. The spores appear smooth in the light microscope, their fine warts can only be seen with the help of an electron microscope . The fruiting bodies grow in tufts and "sociable".
ecology
The stick sponges are saprobiontic wood dwellers that grow from deciduous and, more rarely, softwood.
species
There are two species of the genus in Europe.
- Smooth-handled stick sponge ( Kuehneromyces lignicola )
- Common stick sponge ( Kuehneromyces mutabilis )
The Japanese stick sponge (now counted among the Schüpplingen as Pholiota nameko ) was placed in this genus for a while.
Systematics and names
The genus is very closely related to the genus of Schüpplinge ( Pholiota ) and is attributed to it by some authors. The scientific name honors the French mycologist Robert Kühner .
meaning
The common stick sponge is a popular edible mushroom and can also be cultivated on wood. The smooth-handled stick sponge is inedible.
There is a risk of confusion with the deadly poisonous poison rabbit ( Galerina marginata ).
