The Storoschewoi ( Russian Сторожевой ) was a frigate of Project 1135 of the Soviet Navy . She was part of the Baltic fleet .

mutiny

A mutiny broke out on the frigate on November 9, 1975 . The leader was the political officer Valeri Sablin , who was the most senior officer on board after the captain . After a screening of the film Battleship Potemkin , Sablin had locked the captain in and, in an address to the crew, denounced the Communist Party's deviation from Lenin's ideals. He presented his plan to take over the ship with volunteers and run from Riga to Leningrad in order to address the party leadership and the population there via the media. However, the naval leadership feared the crew would flee to Sweden and put Yak-28 bombers and available warships together to form combat groups to stop the outgoing Storoschewoi and, if necessary, sink it. Persecuted by their own armed forces, Sablin finally gave up the venture. He was arrested by a military court convicted and on August 3, 1976 executed .

Decommissioning

The ship remained in service until 2002 and has since been scrapped.

fiction

Elements of the mutiny on the Storoschewoi inspired Tom Clancy to write his novel The Hunt for Red October .
